Several injured in crash involving motorcycle at Hilliard and Gulf roads (UPDATED)

A motorcyclist was seriously hurt and several others also sustained injuries in a crash at the intersection of Gulf and Hilliard roads in Elyria on Monday. Police and fire were dispatched to a multivehicle crash with injuries at 3:52 p.m. on Monday at the intersection. While en route, the crew of Elyria Fire Engine 4 learned that the crash involved a minivan, a pickup and a motorcycle. In his report, fire Lt. Paul Brooks wrote that crew arrived to find a minivan in the intersection with moderate damage to its front, the pickup off the road with moderate damage to its passenger side and the motorcycle about 75 feet away with a man, the driver, partially underneath it. The motorcyclist was reportedly seriously injured, having an "altered mental status and multiple traumatic injuries." Brooks said that the crew asked Lorain County 911 Dispatch to alert University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center that a traumatically injured patient was being transported to the hospital by LifeCare Ambulance. The female driver of the pickup truck was also taken to UH Elyria by LifeCare, along with two of the four minors that had been in the truck with her. One of the minors had injuries to their face and hand and was bleeding. The other two minors were released to their father when he arrived at the scene. The driver of the minivan initially told Elyria fire she had no injuries, Brooks wrote, but she was taken under the care of an ambulance from Sheffield fire. "Engine 4 firefighters worked hand in hand with several agencies to assure the best possible patient care," Brooks wrote. Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said that as of 6:30 p.m. police were still investigating the crash. He said that drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be factors.
