Wednesday was deadline for most Lorain County issues, candidates to make Nov. 3 ballot

The 90-day filing deadline for nonpartisan races, ballot issues and local options to be presented to the Lorain County Board of Elections for inclusion on the November ballot was Wednesday. The Board of Elections will meet at 3 p.m. Aug. 13 at 1985 N. Ridge Road in Sheffield Township to certify petitions and number the issues that will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. Candidates Incumbent county Commissioner Jeff Riddell, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Carolyn White and write-in candidate Andrew Lipian. That term is four years. Incumbent county Auditor Craig Snodgrass, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Republican Elaine Seguin. Lorain County Probate Judge James Walther is unopposed for reelection to a six-year term. Lorain County also will choose between Democrat Brian Shaver and incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, in Ohio's 5th Congressional District. Incumbent state Reps. Joe Miller, D-Amherst, and Gayle Manning, R-Avon, are running to succeed Gayle Manning's son Nathan Manning in Ohio's 13th Senate District, representing Lorain and Huron counties in Columbus. Both Miller and Gayle Manning are term-limited out of their seats. Democrat Mike Baker and Republican Cliff Winkel are running to replace Gayle Manning as state representative to Ohio's 52nd House District. Winkel was selected to replace Nathan Manning on the ballot after Manning was appointed to the 9th District Court of Appeals. Republican Brad Lacko and Democrat Matt Lundy are running for Ohio's 53rd House District seat, while incumbent Rep. Kellie Deeter, R-Norwalk, is being challenged by Democrat Brenda Buchanan in the 54th House District. Democrat Tavia Galonski and Republican Nathan Manning are in a race to replace retired judge Donna Carr on the 9th District Court of Appeals. Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Nathan Manning to fill Carr's unexpired term, and Nathan Manning must run to keep the seat. Republican Cynthia Curtin is challenging incumbent Judge Betty Sutton, a Democrat, for a seat on the 9th District Court of Appeals. Ohioans also will choose their governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor of state, secretary of state, treasurer of state, two Supreme Court justices and a U.S. Senator. Issues Lorain County Children Services will have an additional 0.45-mill, five-year levy on the ballot for the care and placement of abused, neglected and dependent children. The Lorain County General Health District is asking for a 0.5-mill, five-year renewal levy for operating expenses. Amherst Schools are asking for an additional 5.97-mill levy for a continuing period of time for current expenses. Clearview Schools are asking voters to renew a 3.91-mill, five-year levy for current expenses. Elyria City Schools are asking for an additional 8.9-mill continuing levy for current expenses. Herrick Memorial Library in Wellington is asking for a 1.25-mill, five-year renewal for current expenses. Oberlin City Schools have one levy and one income tax issue on the ballot, both renewals: A 1.3-mill, five-year renewal levy for education technology and a 0.75 percent, five-year income tax for current expenses. The Vermilion School District, including parts of Lorain County and Erie County, is asking for a 6.03 mill, five-year renewal levy for current expenses. And the Erie County General Health District, which also includes portions of Vermilion, is seeking a 0.2-mill, five-year levy for current expenses. Avon Lake voters will see a proposed income tax increase, from 1.5 percent to 1.9 percent for six years for general road maintenance. Kipton is asking for a 2-mill, five-year renewal levy for permanent sewer improvements. Sheffield is asking for a 1.75-mill renewal for five years for firefighting Grafton has three charter amendments on the ballot, regarding changes to requirements and appointments of positions and the village charter review commission. Sheffield Township is asking voters to approve an additional 2.5-mill, five-year levy for fire and EMS protection. Brighton Township and Columbia Township each are asking voters to renew 1-mill, five-year road improvement levies. Henrietta Township has two levies, one a 1-mill renewal for five years for roads and bridges and the other a 0.75-mill, five-year renewal for fire protection. Avon Ward 2, Precinct A will have a local liquor option for Sunday sales on the ballot for In Forno Pizza, while 2-B will have Sunday sales options for Westside Pancake Company and Strip A Steakhouse. Elyria 2-D voters will see a Sunday sales option for Nirvana Grocers LLC. North Ridgeville 4-F will have a Sunday sales option for Buns and Brews Sports Bar and Grill. CC Saloon in Grafton and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 4003 in Columbia Township also are asking voters in those communities to approve Sunday sales. Upcoming deadlines Write-in candidates have until 4 p.m. Aug. 24 to declare their candidacy for the ballot, proposed charter amendments are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 4 and the deadline to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 5. The Board of Elections is always looking for more poll workers. Applications can be found on the Board of Elections website, elections Director Lisette Gracia said.
