Mercy Health adds cancer services in Lorain

Mercy Health in Lorain announced Monday an expansion of medical services that address cancer. In a news release, Mercy Health stated that the expansion of care for individuals struggling with cancer includes improvements at the Mercy Health – O'Brien Cancer Center, additional treatment capabilities and added technologies for improved access, coordination and the experiences of patients. The expansion of services will feature screenings, risk assessments, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and support for cancer survivors. "Every cancer diagnosis is different, and patients often need the expertise of multiple specialists throughout treatment," stated Dr. David Barron, radiation oncologist and medical director of oncology at Mercy Health - Lorain. "Adding medical oncology allows us to bring more of that expertise together in one program, making it easier for patients to receive coordinated care from a team that is working together on their behalf." Mercy Health also announced that Dr. Kasra Karamlou, a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist, will be joining the oncology program. "I am honored to join Mercy Health at a time when oncology services are growing in Lorain," Karamlou stated. "Every patient's diagnosis and treatment goals are unique. My focus is to help patients understand their options and develop a treatment plan that reflects their individual needs, while providing compassionate, evidence-based care throughout their journey." In the statement released Monday, Dr. James Kravec, chief clinical officer for Mercy Health in Lorain, reflected on how residents are affected by cancer each day. "Cancer touches nearly every family, and patients deserve access to high-quality, compassionate care close to home," Kravec said. "Expanding our cancer program to include medical oncology reflects our commitment to growing specialty services in Lorain and strengthening the long-term health of the communities we serve."
