Lorain public libraries collecting school supplies All six branches of the Lorain Public Library System will be collecting new school supplies for the United Way of Greater Lorain County's Collect-Sort-Deliver initiative in August. Lorain Public Library System has branches in Avon, Columbia Station, Lorain, North Ridgeville and Sheffield Lake. The school supplies gathered will benefit Lorain County elementary school students. There are two ways to donate: either shop and take the supplies to a designated box at any of the drop-off locations or shop online and have your donation shipped directly to the United Way of Greater Lorain County's office at 642 Broadway, Lorain, OH 44052 to the attention of Kelsey Jones. The 2026 school supply collection wish list: · 2-pocket folders * Laddie pencils · Backpacks * Notebooks (single subject, wide-ruled) · Disinfecting wipes * Pencil pouches · Dry erase markers Hand Sanitizer · Glue sticks Scissors (children's) · Over-the-ear headphones (not ear buds) * Tissues · Highlighters * Plastic zippered bags (sandwich and/or gallon sized) · Crayons (24 count) * Fidget toys / Sensory items · Index cards Those interested in volunteering to help sort, count, pack or deliver the school supplies should contact Kelsey Jones at United Way 440-277-6530. Polish Fisherman's Club seeks new members The Polish Fishermen's Club of Lorain is in search of new members. The main objectives of the 78-plus-year-old club are advancing growing youth, conservation, fishing, and promote access to Lake Erie and general camaraderie. All are welcome to join. The club sponsors students for school trips, 4-H Camp on Kelleys Island, fishing derbies, cleanup at the Hot Waters boat ramps in Lorain, etc. Polish heritage is not required. Main Street Vermilion taking donations Main Street Vermilion is accepting donations of large, clean plastic bottles, size 2-liter or larger, for the lantern-making workshop to be held 6-8 p.m. Aug. 4 at Ritter Public Library. Main Street is hosting the workshops ahead of Lantern Parade Vermilion, a new event planned for Nov. 7 that invites the community to bring their lighted creations and stroll from Main Street Beach throughout downtown to the lighthouse in the early evening dusk. Drop off donations at Main Street Vermilion, 685 Main St. Individual drinking bottles will not be accepted. Amherst Art Festival seek artists and craft vendors The Amherst Art Festival is looking for artists and craft vendors for the upcoming event, to be held 4-8:30 p.m. Sept. 5, in downtown Amherst along Church Street and Park Avenue. Vendors must offer handmade items and original art. Re-sellers and mass-produced items will items will not be accepted. Organizers also are looking for painters, illustrators and live performers, including musicians, dancers, aerial performers and specialty acts, interactive or experiential art concepts. Today - Bring sensitive documents such as tax forms and medical records to be shredded onsite in the library parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon at the Avon Library branch. Each household may bring up to five standard-size copier paper boxes or five grocery-size bags of documents. Staples are fine, but no paper clips, binder clips, binders, spiral-bound notebooks, other metal objects, batteries or electronics. This free event is provided by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District.
