Remembering Wellington's 'Cheese Capital of the World' heritage ahead of America250 celebration

WELLINGTON — As Wellington prepares to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary with its annual Fourth of July festivities, the village is also reflecting on the era that earned it the title "Cheese Capital of the World." Long before fireworks lit the sky over the Lorain County Fairgrounds or thousands gathered downtown for the Independence Day parade, Wellington was one of the nation's leading centers for cheese production, storage and distribution. During the late 1800s, millions of pounds of cheese passed through the village each year, helping establish Wellington as the heart of Ohio's booming dairy industry. Today, reminders of that legacy remain throughout downtown, including a historical marker outside Truly Simple Boutique, 134 W. Herrick Ave. Owner Meegan Skeans-Koubeck said that the word "cheese" can still be seen on the building's upper facade, along with the plaque. They've become frequent conversation starters with customers exploring downtown. "A lot of people will see the top of the building and they'll be like, 'Oh, we thought you had cheese,'" she said. "I always point them to the sign and give them the basics. They would make the cheese and literally ship it right off. Our closeness to the train tracks made us ideal." The Southern Lorain County Historical Society, research by local historian Nicole Hayes and the Ohio History Journal tracked Wellington's rise as a cheese-producing center began in the mid 1860s after brothers Charles and John Horr opened one of the area's first modern cheese factories in nearby Huntington Township. Instead of making cheese on individual farms, dairy farmers began bringing their milk to centralized factories, creating a more efficient production system that quickly spread throughout southern Lorain County. According to village records, by the late 1870s, more than 40 cheese factories and storage facilities operated in and around the village, making Wellington the center for collecting, storing and shipping cheese produced throughout the region. The Ohio History Journal and Southern Lorain County Historical Society said Wellington's location along the railroad played a major role in the industry's success. Before refrigerated transportation became widely available, the railroad allowed cheese to be shipped quickly to markets throughout the United States and eventually overseas, helping establish Wellington as one of the nation's leading dairy hubs. According to village records, the cheese industry helped drive the village's growth, supporting new businesses, warehouses, banks and commercial buildings while attracting additional residents. During the height of the cheese boom, Wellington's population more than doubled as the dairy industry became a major part of the local economy. At its peak in 1878, the historical marker outside the former Horr-Warner Cheese Co. building states that more than 7 million pounds of cheese passed through Wellington, underscoring the scale of the industry during its heyday. The Ohio History Journal said Wellington's prominence as a cheese center began to decline during the early 1900s as improvements in refrigeration and transportation changed the dairy industry. Selling fresh milk to growing cities such as Cleveland became more profitable than manufacturing cheese, gradually bringing the village's dominance in the industry to an end. Although commercial cheese production faded, the village's history has remained an important part of its identity. Historic buildings still line downtown streets, and markers throughout the community preserve stories from Wellington's agricultural past. Skeens-Koubeck said that she enjoys operating out of an unconventional building. "Our storefront is very small, but being on the corner point of the building, we have a unique shape to it that makes it feel cozy," she said. "Our windows give us light all day long, so it's like a greenhouse in the summer." As Wellington prepares to welcome residents and visitors for its America250 celebration starting Friday, Skeans-Koubeck said the village's history remains one of its greatest strengths. "I do love that our town is so historical," she said. "The Spirit of '76 Museum and the fact that we can celebrate that every year on the Fourth of July is really amazing. The historical buildings obviously are gorgeous, and we're very lucky to be in a historic town where our community comes out and supports our small businesses." While Wellington is no longer shipping trainloads of cheese across the nation, the story of the industry that helped build the village continues to be shared with each new generation.
