Coupon Queen: What to watch for when thrifting

The art of thrifting has grown in popularity in recent years. Part of this is due to thousands of social media accounts dedicated to showcasing their thrift-store finds. Since I started thrifting, I've sharpened my thrift store skills. Here are a few things that I watch for every time I walk in the door: Picture frames One of my favorite thrift-store bargains. I look for simple frames to display family photos, but I also keep an eye out for artwork in attractive frames. Sometimes I love the piece as-is, while other times I simply replace the print with something that better matches my home. Either way, I usually spend just a few dollars instead of paying department store prices. Keep in mind that these frames can also be a jump start for those who are a bit crafty. Repaint the frames, add some colorful string, or burn the wooden frames for a unique flair. Lamps Brand-new lamps can be pricey, so the lighting aisle is always worth browsing. While some lamps may look dated, a fresh coat of spray paint or a new lampshade can completely transform them. Before buying, I always ask if I can plug the lamp in to make sure it works properly. A friend and I recently went thrifting, and she found a unique turtle lamp that she added to her bookcase. I must admit, I wouldn't have given it a second look at the thrift store, but once she added it to her space at home, it was the perfect amount of whimsy. Furniture Solid wood furniture is one of the best values you'll find at a thrift store. Don't let a few scratches or scuffs scare you away, as many pieces can be sanded, painted or stained to look brand new. Over the years, I've refinished nightstands, a dresser, and a headboard for less than $100 total, creating custom pieces for a fraction of the cost of buying new. Glassware and serving dishes Thrift stores are packed with serving bowls, casserole dishes, platters and glassware. I use many of these when hosting holiday gatherings or taking a meal to someone in need. If I don't get the dish back, I'm only out a few dollars instead of one of my expensive serving pieces. Name-brand clothes Give yourself a little time and patience, as the clothing racks can hide some amazing bargains. I've found brands like Abercrombie, Ralph Lauren and Lands' End for less than $10 each. Before purchasing, I always inspect items carefully for stains, holes, missing buttons or broken zippers. I don't find something every trip, but when I do, the savings are well worth the time spent browsing. Keeping an open mind is the key to a successful thrifting trip. You may not find exactly what you're looking for every visit, but with a little patience, you can furnish your home, update your wardrobe, and save hundreds of dollars each year.
