Group offers free meals to kids in Lorain County Our FAMILY is offering free meals and snacks to children and youths across Lorain County through the USDA's newly renamed SUN Meals (formerly Summer Food Service Program). The SUN Meals program ensures that all children ages 1 through 18 have access to nutritious meals when school is out. Additionally, individuals ages 19 through 21 who have been identified as having mental or physical disabilities and are currently enrolled in an educational program with an individualized education program are also eligible. No registration or identification is required. Locally, University Hospitals Medical Center, 630 East River St., Elyria, will serve meals June 1 through Aug. 21. Any child is eligible to receive a complimentary meal through the program — there is no income qualification. Free hot, nutritious meals will be provided to all children ages 1 to 18 Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Per the program guidelines, children must consume the meals onsite — no meals may be taken to go. Lorain libraries offer summer lunches The Lorain Main Library and Domonkas Library branch will offer summer meals for kids from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The meal is for all those ages 18 and younger. Admiral King Class of 1966 plans reunion The Admiral King High School Class of 1966 is planning its 60th reunion on Sept. 4 at Brass and Bronze and Sept. 5 at Italian American Veterans, both in Lorain. Email information and registration have been emailed. Classmates who have not received information should contact the reunion committee by email to ronsislowski@hotmail.com. Herrick Memorial Library staging a scavenger hunt The Herrick Memorial Library in Wellington is having a scavenger hunt for youths 11 to 17 through June 30. Pick up an instruction packet at he library's front desk. A treat will be given to those who return their filled-out packet by the June 30 deadline. Entries with the most correct answers will be entered into a prize drawing. Registration is not required. Marion L. Steele Class of 1966 plans reunion Marion L. Steele High School Class of 1966 will hold its 60th reunion July 18 at Ziggy's Pub, 193 Park Ave., Amherst. A meet-and-greet will be July 17 at Ghost Tree, 300 Church St., Amherst. Oberlin Family Fun Nights on Fridays Oberlin is hosting Tunes on Tappan, Family Fun Nights from 6-8 p.m. Friday evenings June 12 through July 31 at the Clark bandstand, Tappan Square. Concerts will not be held June 19 or July 3 due to the Juneteenth and Independence Day holidays. A variety of music will be spotlighted — Cleveland's Breakfast Club will open the series June 12 with 1980s and 1990s pop and rock favorites, Cleveland Keys will bring its dueling piano show to the square June 26, The Element will perform hits spanning the 1960s through the 2000s on July 10, followed by The Bottom Line on July 17 with Motown and classic R&B selections. The Orchestra will take the stage July 24 performing pop, disco, funk and Motown music, while Walk of Love will close the series July 31 with party rock and popular hits from the 1980s through today. Family Fun Nights, hosted by the Oberlin Recreation Department, will take place alongside the concerts and feature a different special activity each week. The Oberlin Fire Department Obstacle Course will be featured June 12, followed by outdoor games and a magician on June 26. Arts and crafts featuring iN Education Inc.'s Foldspace Origami Studio are scheduled for July 10. A foam party will take place July 17, outdoor games will return July 24, and Wild Hooves Farm Animal Rescue and Petting Zoo will visit July 31. Families also can enjoy bouncy houses, games and activities, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon animals, a caricature artist, cotton candy and food trucks each evening. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets. All events are free. Monday - Early history and shipbuilding heritage of the Black River: The Lorain County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society presents Matthew Weisman as guest presenter for its program at 7 p.m. on the shipbuilding heritage of the Black River in Lorain. This free program will be held online via Zoom and is open to the public. To receive the Zoom link, email meetings@loraincoogs.org. - Amherst Public Library trustees will hold a regular meeting at the library at 5:45 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. - The Lorain County Rural Democrats will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Grafton School, 1111 Elm St., Grafton. The first half-hour of the meeting is set aside for socializing, and the formal meeting begins at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Tuesday - Celebrate the country's 250th by recounting the rich histories of Lorain's most noteworthy figures from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lorain Main Library. Bring a bag lunch; snacks and drinks are provided. - The Herrick Memorial Library will host its summer reading kickoff at 1 p.m. June 9-11 at the library. Unearth the story of how we got our clothing before Walmart and Amazon. The Lorain Weavers Guild will be on hand doing demonstrations of collection wool, dying it and then spinning and weaving it into cloth. This program requires registration, which can be done in person at the Herrick Memorial Library or by calling the library at (440) 647-2120. - The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Richard E. Jacobs Health Campus, 33100 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. All who give through June 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice, plus automatic entry for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards. - Experience the calming, stress-relieving benefits of coloring beautiful designs and patterns made for adults. Coloring sheets and color pencils will be provided for the session from 2-3:30 p.m. at the North Ridgeville Library branch. - Celebrate America's 250th anniversary with movies at the Columbia Library branch from 2-3:30 p.m. Popcorn provided while supplies last. - How to best prepare for future care decisions and changes including respite care, residential care and end-of-life care presented from 6-7 p.m. at the Avon Library branch. - Learn the basic procedures and safety protocols to operate the embroidery machine in the create space from 6 to 7 p.m. at the North Ridgeville Library branch. Guests pay $5. - The Avon Democratic Club meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Library branch, 37485 Harvest Drive, Avon. All are welcome. Featured speaker is Joe Miller, Democratic candidate for Ohio Senate District 13. - Drop in and enjoy light refreshments from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lorain Main Library and explore the local history of the Juneteenth holiday. - Local artist Mary Jo Clark will demonstrate artistic techniques using watercolor, pencils and other media from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Domonkas Library branch. Dress for the weather and bring a blanket. Weather permitting. - Local artist Camara Goodrich will lead participants in this outdoor art workshop 3-5 p.m. at the South Lorain Library branch. The program focuses on capturing scenery and observation, light, atmosphere and the joy of painting outdoors. In case of inclement weather, this class will be rescheduled for June 26. Saturday, June 13 - Bring your sensitive documents such as tax forms and medical records to be shredded on-site in the Lorain Main Library parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon and again 9 a.m. to noon June 20 at the North Ridgeville Library branch. Each household may bring up to five standard-size copier paper boxes or five grocery-size bags of documents. Staples are fine, but no paper clips, binder clips, binders, spiral-bound notebooks, other metal objects, batteries or electronics. This free event is provided by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. The event may end early if the truck is full. - Children with varying learning styles and abilities will enjoy a program with stories, songs, games and a social time 10:30-11:15 a.m. at the Avon Library branch and again 6:30-7:30 p.m. June 16 at the North Ridgeville Library branch. While content is geared for ages 3 to 7, all ages are welcome. Caregivers and siblings are welcome to attend. - Enjoy a lively family story time complete with American Sign Language interpretation from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Avon Library branch.
