Track and field: Lorain's Jazion Moore, Autumn Roberts happy with seconds at GCC meet

BRUNSWICK — Lorain's Jazion Moore and Autumn Roberts were searching for gold Friday at the Greater Cleveland Conference championships, but the pair of Titans were still pleased with the amount of silver they mined. Moore was second in the 200-meter run (22.42) and helped the Titans' 400 relay (42.39) and 800 relay (1:28.49) also take second in leading the Lorain boys (39 points) to a tie for fifth with Shaker Heights on the final day of the meet. "It builds me up more," Moore said of his performance. "I'm helping my team get better and better and better each week. I'm just ready for the next one. That's it." Roberts was second in both hurdle events, crossing the line in the 100 in 15.60 and the 300 in 47.81. She also helped the Titans girls take fourth in the 400 (51.16) and 800 relays (1:49.46). The meet, against eight of the better programs in Northeast Ohio, was a good marker for her as she and her teammates prepare for the North Royalton Division I regional and potential bids to the state meet. "I'm feeling good, real good," Roberts said. "(Today) shows me where I need to improve and get better. Today shows me that I can make it out (of the regional)." The host Blue Devils won the girls championship, while Mentor used a dominant 3,200 race to claim first in the boys competition. Moore (22.42) ended the day by finishing just behind Brunswick's Jacob Sepesy (22.28) in the 200. "It felt good, but I wish I could have gotten first, though," Moore said. "That would have been even better for me, but I tried my best. I'll be ready for next week." The Blue Devils ripping victories out of the Titans' hands was also a theme in the sprint relays. Lorain was seeded first and the Blue Devils second in the 800 relay, but Brunswick got out fast and held of Lorain off to take a 1:28.00-1:28.49 victory. The teams finished as seeded in the 400 relay, with the Blue Devils (42.19) claiming victory by 0.2 seconds. "I think (the relays) went great," Moore said. "We had terrible handoffs, a little bit, but we can clean it up and get faster times. If we all work together, that's all it takes." Moore teamed with Troy Jones, Donte Tinsley II and Jeramiah Daniels for both relays. Roberts was second to Shaker Heights' Jennifer Rawls in both hurdle events. Rawls got the 14.69-15.60 edge in the 100 and beat the Lorain junior 44.09-47.87 in the 300. In both races, Roberts was nearly a second ahead of third place. "I was feeling confident," Roberts said of the 100. "I needed to focus on my rhythm and be very consistent. Other than that, I had a lot of positive energy when I ran." For the longer hurdle event, Roberts made sure to channel her energy for success. "I was managing my pace and speed for sure," Roberts said. "I got out of my blocks well and had a good start. Then I finished strong." In the 800 relay, Roberts was paired with Ava Miller, Janelle Butler and Viviana Chavez. Miller, Chavez and Roberts were anchored by Jme Hood in the 400 relay.
