LorMet teaches financial literacy in three local schools

Last month, in recognition of April's "Financial Literacy Month," LorMet Community Credit Union delivered in-person financial education lessons in three Lorain County high schools. In a news release, LorMet said that its representatives visited Clearview High School on April 14, Wellington High School on April 28 and Elyria High School on April 30 to teach practical financial skills to students. "Financial literacy is no longer optional, it's essential," said Shavena Brown, 1st vice president/COO of LorMet, in the release. "Credit union leaders bring live experience. When children and young adults hear how money decisions affect actual businesses, families or careers, it moves the topic from abstract to tangible. Concepts like saving, credit and risk stop being 'rules' and start becoming stories with consequences. That realism sticks, even for younger children. We are proud to have the opportunity to influence our communities' young minds." LorMet said that the financial lessons it provides to students have been refined over the past decade and have a proven track record of helping young people better plan and understand their finances. Discussions in April covered topics including budgeting fundamentals, credit management, fraud awareness and the realities of financing major life decisions. "Our goal is to meet students where they are and give them tools they can use right away," said Daniel Cwalina, president/CEO of LorMet, in the release. "Whether it's understanding credit scores or avoiding common financial pitfalls, these are lessons that have lifelong impact." The release said that LorMet would continue expanding its youth education services throughout 2026 and beyond.
