Track and Field: Avon boys and girls continue winning ways at Jim Reynolds Invitational

AVON — The tradition and domination continued Friday at the 48th Jim Reynolds Track and Field Invitational. The Avon boys won their home meet for the sixth year in a row, ninth time since 2015 and 13th time overall. The Avon girls won their fourth straight home invite and 17th overall. The stalled weather pattern finally relented as the rain faded just prior to the start of the running events at 5 p.m. Boys teams broke three meet records, while four fell on the girls side. The Avon boys won only two of 12 running events but three of five field events. They amassed 137 points, 75 in the field events. Solon was second with 87. The Avon girls won seven of 17 events — all running — to run away from runner-up Solon 155-117. Senior Jackson Hughes was a double winner for the Avon boys, sweeping the high jump (6-foot-4) and long jump (22-3.75). Senior Jacob Abfall had a meet record for the second straight year in defending his shot put title (57-11). "I threw a PR by 6 inches. I knew it was coming," said Abfall. "I honestly kind of surprised myself with this weather. It's very cold. I wasn't necessarily ready. I'm used to throwing PRs in the 80- and 90-degree weather that we have later in the season. "Earlier in the week we were working on some technical changes. I really think that I executed them well today, just working my back to middle and getting out on the ball at the finish. It feels awesome to know that I'm in such a good program with Coach (Max) Seipel and Coach (Jared) Cecchetti. I'm ready to compete with the best throwers in Ohio. I always say that Ohio has the best throwers." The Avon boys also got a nice win from the 400-meter relay of sophomore Bishop Weatherspoon, senior Sam Ulery, junior Graham Rowlison and junior Jairel Fenton, which clocked in a meet-record 42.56. It broke the mark of 42.62 set last year by Glen Oak. "It feels amazing to get this win for our team," said Fenton, who placed second in high jump (6-4) and third in the 100 (10.97). "We set it in our minds what we had to come out and do, especially on our home track. We just wanted to show out for our crowd. "It's Avon against the world. We work very hard every day. We just need to focus in on ourselves and not anybody else." Junior Jared Keressi had Avon's other win on the track as he outkicked Rocky River junior Ryan Stirm to win the 800 1:55.98 to 1:56.13. "I've never been under 1:57 before so this was a huge PR," said Keressi. "I was kind of hyped because this was the first time I got to race the 800 fresh. I was pushing it very hard at the 400 mark. He started pushing up on me and made me kind of fight. With 300 to go I knew I had to make a move around him otherwise I would be stuck." Avon boys coach Scott Lanham was thrilled. "The guys did an outstanding job," he said. "Seventy-five points from our field events is outstanding for a meet like this with the competition that's here. It's a great meet and a home meet. "It's nice to come out here and win our home meet and to remember why we are here and who we named the meet after. Coach Jim Reynolds, we remember him. That's always a great thing. We still have a lot of work to do. We have a couple weeks before conference before we make a run for the state. Our motto this year is to be in the last race, the last jump, the last throw." Senior Kaitlyn Reese, junior Paige Justice and sophomore Ally Brediger were the driving forces for the Avon girls. Reese defended her meet titles in the 1,600 (4:56.21) and 800 (2:15.36). She also teamed with Jayla Antrum, Jessica Pendleton and Brediger for a second in the 1,600 relay (3:57.88). "We had a lot of great performances," said Reese, who will compete for Michigan State. "I think we have to be very proud of ourselves. It's a little sad it's my last home meet, but I'm very excited for the next chapter that I have. I'm very glad that I was able to come to this great program and share these four years with everyone." Justice won the 100 hurdles in a meet- and school-record 14.44. She came back to defend her title in the 300 hurdles (44.31). In the interim she teamed with Antrum, Molly Kennedy and Brediger for a second in the 800 relay (1:42.37). "I was so excited about the 100 hurdles. It was a big accomplishment for me," said Justice. "Last week (at Comet Relays) I didn't have the best performance. I knew I had to come out here and do my best and the home meet for the seniors. Honestly, I was a little nervous (before the 100 hurdles), but I know that's what I need when I run. Once I got into the blocks I just knew I could do what I needed to do." Brediger was successful in her defense of the 100 (11.90) and 200 (22.68). The 100 was by far the tougher challenge as she held off Solon junior Samantha Singleton for the second week in a row. Singleton clocked 11.99. Brediger also defeated Singleton at the Comet Relays, 12.24 to 12.50. "It's getting to that time of the season where it's time to go. We all know that," said Brediger. "Our seniors have been a big part of this program just helping us and being a good role model for all of us. This meet is definitely another big one to show how much that they mean to us. This is a very good meet. There's a lot of competition. "It's very good before SWCs and districts to get that last good competition. It's that time of the season. It's time to flip the switch. We have things to fix, but everything is coming together." Avon girls coach Sam Ulery (Sam's dad) was upbeat. "I'm very pleased with the progression that we've made over the last few weeks," he said. "There's a lot of little technical things that we've been working on. We're starting to see those things improve. And yet there's still more to be done. I'm looking forward to what's going to happen over the next couple weeks. I think that the sky is the limit for this group if they keep working hard." Avon Lake sophomore Rileigh Scarvelli defended her shot put title with a big PR of 45-1.25 and won discus (138-7) after finishing second last year. "I made a change in shot put," she said. "I kept throwing 42 feet in my last few meets. I needed to throw farther. I needed to change up my form, but I was resisting that change for a long time. My dad and my coach have been trying to get me to do it. You can glide and block your feet, or you can glide and switch your feet. I changed my finish. It (the 45-footer) was my first throw.
