MLB's top overall draft choice in 2024, Travis Bazzana, makes debut for Guardians

CLEVELAND — Fans were hoping this day would arrive sometime this season. Prior to their game against the Rays, the Guardians promoted major league baseball's top overall draft pick in 2024, Travis Bazzana, who made his debut at Progressive Field on Tuesday night. It's time to go bananas for Bazzana. "I'm not sure what it's going to look like," the Australian-born Bazzana said of the reception from fans. "I'm sure there will be some kind of cheer and obviously that will be a great feeling. I'm gonna take it in. The fans that come and show up or watch it on TV, I'm gonna give it my all, and I hope to really impact Cleveland baseball for a long time. "I'm just excited to be a part of a team that's winning. Hopefully I can provide on both sides of the ball and help us keep winning and go win the division." Bazzana, who replaced Juan Brito on the roster, pushed his way into the big leagues with a fast start at Triple-A Columbus, where he batted .287 with a .933 OPS, two home runs and 10 RBIs in 24 games. He hit .304 with a .965 OPS, 10 doubles, two homers, nine RBIs and eight stolen bases in 20 games this month. Brito struggling at the plate and in the field, also helped accelerate the process. "I think with the way he was swinging the bat in Triple-A, and with the need on the team, we kind of need a little jolt," manager Stephen Vogt said. "But at the same time, it was the right timing (for him). I think we have a lot of people working and evaluating and doing those kinds of things and it was a consensus that it was time." "I'd say, the last couple weeks at Triple-A, I've really been at my best with my swing decisions, really damaging the balls in the zone, walking a lot," Bazzana said. "I feel like I've found my plans and the combination of how I want my swing to look now." Bazzana, 23, estimated that 15-20 family members and friends would be in attendance, including his mother, father and two older brothers. Though multiple players from Australia have made it to the majors, Bazzana, the first No. 1 overall draft pick in Cleveland history, is the first top selection from his country. The game was televised in Australia on ESPN2. "It's a great story for Australia. It's a great story for Travis and it's a great story for our game," Vogt said. "Our game's really growing globally and (so are) the opportunities that people have from all over the world to come play this beautiful game." Bazzana's arrival may have happened earlier, but his progression was slowed last year by oblique injuries that sidelined him for two months. "I had just started in Double-A. I hadn't spent much time there, so it wasn't like I was knocking on the door at that point," he said. "Obviously, I had intentions to keep moving forward in 2025 and that really halted that. I was just trying to put my best foot forward once I went down (with the injuries). I had some chances in Triple-A in '25, that's when (the MLB debut) moves closer to reality. I just focused on having a good spring (this year) and had a good start to the season. "I would have hoped by 2026 I was able to impact this team when I got drafted. It's good to be here now. (There were) a couple bumps but I'm feeling really strong." "I kind of felt like we got to watch Travis play for the first time this spring," Vogt said. "We got a glimpse at him in '25, but (we) just got to see a number of games (this spring) and you could really see what he brings to the table. Obviously, this is a hitter with power, can hit the ball to all fields, great baserunner, can play some second base. "From what I know about him, it seems like he's driven to be great and, he's receptive to coaching. He's receptive to learning." The expectations are high for Bazzana, who joins the Cavaliers' LeBron James and the Browns' Myles Garrett on the list of Cleveland's top overall draft choices. "The beautiful part of it is that I've worked really hard to be in a place where there's expectations and pressure," he said. "Realistically, I've always wanted the most for myself, growing up and now. I think that any expectations that are out there, I have just as great for myself. "It won't be mitigating. I just gotta go out and be me, play hard and just be the best versions of myself and I'm sure it's going to be quality work." Bazzana has already received a vote of confidence from one of the majors' best players, Jose Ramirez. "One of my favorite days of spring training was a batting practice where we were in the same group, and I felt like my swings got better watching how he was working," Bazzana said. "And then he kind of said something to me like, 'Bazzana, you look ready. You're ready.' And I was like, 'That's cool.' "That next week, I think I had a good game against the Giants and some different things. And it was like, 'If there's someone in that clubhouse that I want to feel like I got a quality relationship (with) to go out and be the best version of myself, (it's Ramirez).' I watch him and I love what he does. So, to have him say that I was like, 'Yeah, that's going to make me comfortable out here (Tuesday), I think.'"
