Track and field: North Ridgeville boys, girls sweep Brookside Invitational

SHEFFIELD VILLAGE — North Ridgeville dominated both sides of the competition at Saturday's 12th annual Brookside Track and Field Invitational at Sevits Stadium. The Ridgeville boys amassed 159 points to outdistance Brookside (135) and Independence (128). The Ridgeville girls scored 182 points to best Brookside (123). The boys had seven first-place medals (out of 12 running events), three seconds and five third-place awards. The Ridgeville girls had five first-place finishes, seven second-place medals and six thirds. The boys captured their first invite win since 2017. It was the girls' first invite win since taking top honors at Brookside in 2022. Last year, the boys finished second behind Keystone, while the girls placed fourth. Sophomore Javon Harris was a catalyst for the boys. He won the 100 (11.35) and 200 (22.78). He also anchored the winning 400-meter relay (43.80) that included Tiki Fulton, Dylan DeShazo and Colton Moore. "I felt that I had a good finish (for the 100), but my block start could have been better," said Harris. "It wasn't my best start. I stumbled out of my blocks a little bit, but overall a pretty good race. A little choppy block start, but overall it came out pretty good. It's only April but, overall, running pretty fast times. I'm feeling pretty good." Sophomore Halle Edge was a mainstay for the North Ridgeville girls. Edge won the 400 (1:00.64). She was also a member of two winning relays. She teamed up with Mariam Othman, Hayleigh Cass and Madelyn Kuhn to win 800-meter relay (1:47.61). She combined talents with Ellie Meczka, Cass and Adelyne Springer to win the 1,600-meter relay (4:22.82). "It was a great team effort," said North Ridgeville coach Jim Shurtleff. "We had a chance to get some different people involved and contribute. Overall, considering the weather, our kids did great and exceeded our expectations coming in." Brookside senior Avery Davis and Open Door junior Paige Pachinger were multiple winners. Davis won the 100-meter hurdles (16.95) then came back to win the 300-meter hurdles (48.18) and long jump (16-3). Pachinger swept top honors in the 100 (12.69) and 200 (26.41). "(The 100 hurdles) was not how I wanted it at all," said Davis, a 2024 Division II 300-meter hurdles champ at the event and two-time state qualifier in the 100 hurdles. "I pretty much clipped all of (the hurdles). I had a very bad start and it kind of showed for the whole race. I clipped every hurdle and was four-stepping in between. As soon as I came out of the blocks, something just felt wrong. First, I slipped, and then I didn't have any power. The start was very slow. I tried speeding up but then ended up clipping. "The first hurdle determines your rhythm and that messed up my rhythm. I went over with the wrong lead leg because I took too many steps. I went over the first five hurdles with my right leg, which is normally my trail leg, instead of my left leg. I tried getting things turned around and ended up just clipping everything. At that point, I just wanted to finish the race." A Division III state finalist last year in the 100, Pachinger was pleased with her effort. "The season has been going well," she said. "Definitely working on improving my times, that's important. Coaching has been great this year. Definitely excited about that, so hopefully I'm going to make a nice run to state this year."
