Penfield Twp. man cited in crash that killed Wayne County couple the day after Christmas

A Penfield man has been charged in Elyria Municipal Court with killing two Wayne County residents in a two-car crash on state Route 301 in Carlisle Township the day after Christmas. The State Highway Patrol cited Anthony Weir, 46, of Jones Road, with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count each of overtaking and passing and speeding, in Elyria Municipal Court on Wednesday. All four charges are misdemeanors. Weir has not been arrested or booked into the Lorain County Jail. His arraignment is scheduled for May 8 in Judge Gary Bennett's courtroom. Court records did not list an attorney representing him. Elaine Patterson, 71, and Michael Patterson, 63, were fatally injured Dec. 26 after the Chrysler PT Cruiser they were in was hit by Weir's Ford F-350 as he attempted to pass them going north in the 14200 block of Route 301. The Pattersons were going to pick up a purse Elaine Patterson had bought online from a Carlisle Township woman, but pulled into the wrong driveway. They pulled back out onto Route 301 just before 1:30 p.m. Friday. That's when Weir's truck came up behind them, headed north. The Highway Patrol said Weir attempted to pass the Pattersons on the left just as they turned into Stacey Iler's driveway. Weir was going 71 in a 55 mph zone at the time, according to his charges. The impact of the Ford truck pushed the Chrysler off the left side of the road where it caught fire. Weir, bystanders and firefighters in a passing fire truck all stopped and tried to help the Pattersons, witnesses and the Highway Patrol said. Elaine Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Michael Patterson died hours later at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Weir suffered minor injuries and a passenger in his truck wasn't hurt. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seat belts, the Highway Patrol said.
