Detroit man who fled deputies naked, hid in duct work of McKinley school arrested (UPDATED)

ELYRIA — A Michigan man is in custody after fleeing sheriff's deputies at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center in the nude and hiding in the ductwork of a nearby former school building. Lorain County Sheriff's Maj. A.J. Torres said that deputies were dispatched to serve an arrest warrant for failure to appear on Demarkis Taylor, 28, of Detroit, at UH Elyria at 2:34 p.m. Wednesday. Torres said the hospital was aware that Taylor had an outstanding warrant, and contacted the Sheriff's Office when he was ready to be released. Torres said he did not know why Taylor was at the hospital. When deputies approached to place Taylor under arrest, Torres said a woman assaulted and distracted them, allowing Taylor to run. "She intervened, and in the meantime he took off running, absolutely naked," Torres said. The woman, Asia Hunt, 20, was arrested and charged with assault, obstruction and resisting arrest. Torres said she lives at the same Detroit address as Taylor. Deputies lost sight of Taylor, and Elyria police and additional deputies arrived to assist in the search. They fanned out across the UH Elyria campus and the Eastern Heights neighborhood, searching for Taylor with K-9 units and drones for more than an hour. Torres said officers eventually focused their search on the inside of the former McKinley Elementary School. They found Taylor, still naked, hiding in the building's ductwork. Taylor was brought back to the Lorain County Jail where Torres said he would face additional charges stemming from the incident. As of 5 p.m., those additional charges were still pending. Elyria Schools' Eastern Heights campus is just a few blocks from UH Elyria. The school delayed release of elementary students due to the heavy police presence, Communications Director Amy Higgins said. At about 3:50 p.m., Eastern Heights started releasing students only if a parent of other authorized adult was present to take them home, and at 4:45 p.m. Higgins said the district received the all-clear from authorities.
