Track and Field: Keystone boys get over hump, win Midview Shipwreck Invitational

EATON TWP. — The Keystone boys hadn't won an invitational in two years. The Wildcats had four runner-up finishes a year ago, including at the Midview Shipwreck Invitational, which Buckeye won 137-135. Keystone was determined to snap that skid and did so Friday by winning the seventh annual Midview Shipwreck. The Wildcats defeated Buckeye 141-125.5, with Vermilion (118) a close third in a 12-team field. The Wildcats' frontline strength stole the show. Keystone amassed seven firsts, a second and three thirds to win the meet for the second time in three years. Buckeye could only counter with four firsts, four seconds and three thirds. Sophomore Jamie Yuronich and senior Emory Fedor were the main catalysts for Keystone. Yuronich had a hand in two meet-record performances. He teamed with senior Eli McConoughey, sophomore Sam McConoughey and senior Craig Stroud to win the 3,200-meter relay (8:18.85). Yuronich later won the 3,200 in 9:54.76, beating his 2025 meet record of 10:07.57 as he defeated Lake Ridge senior Christian Gorny (10:12.10). Yuronich and Gorny were state cross country qualifiers in the fall. Between those races, Eli McConoughey won the 1,600 by nearly 16 seconds in a meet-record 4:34.36. "I'm very glad that I could help my team. We really needed this," said Yuronich. "The distance team has been doing great today. A big shout-out to all my teammates. I'm very happy where the season is headed for us. The weather was bad but that's part of track. Everybody is running in the same conditions. We're all doing great out there. "We lost to Buckeye by two points last year. That was very hard. We came in today knowing that we had to achieve. We knew we had to perform." Despite being seeded only No. 4 at 11.51, Fedor won the 100 meters in 11.08 over Vermilion senior Brady Parker (11.11) and Buckeye senior Brayden Bonnett (11.22). Bonnett was the No. 1 seed (10.87) and Parker the No. 3 seed (11.40). "My start wasn't very good but I just relaxed and focused on finishing my race," said Fedor. "It was a great time. I'm glad to get something like that early in the season." Fedor also won the long jump (19 feet, 6 inches) but dealt with adversity. The senior had in mind a four-event sweep but had to drop out of the 400 at 80 meters when his hamstring tightened. He also scratched the 200. "My hamstring started tweaking a little bit so I had to give it a rest," Fedor said. "But I'm happy with my 100 and long jump. It was a good day. We have great depth with our distance runners. We love those guys. They did their thing in the 1,600 and 3,200. We got enough points to win." Junior Nick Linden and sophomore Liam Goran accounted for Keystone's other two wins. Despite being seeded No. 3 at 18.10, Linden won the 110 hurdles in 17.48. A 2025 Division II state qualifier, Goran tied a 2021 meet record by winning high jump at 6-0. "We have a bunch of hard-working kids so this is always nice," said Keystone coach Jeff Holzhauer. "We have some holes on our team but grinded it out. "There are always ways we can do better, but we got some other kids that stepped up. Wyatt McKee, this is his first meet. He's a baseball player. He placed fourth in the 200, fifth in the 100 and led off our 400 relay (fifth place). It's been kind of a shift this year. We've been sprint-heavy. This year it's been our distance crew. We knew it was going to happen. They were young last year and they were really good. They put in the miles and had a great offseason." Behind Parker the Vermilion boys finished third for the second year in a row. Parker bounced back after the 100 to help the Sailors' 400 relay of Aiden Kyser, Carter Boley and Chase Jackson to a victory (45.20). Parker closed out the meet by winning the 200 (22.80) over Bonnett (23.19). "It's pretty cold out there. It took the wind out of me," said Parker, a 2025 Division II state qualifier as a member of the 400 relay. "I heard footsteps (from Bonnett). I'm glad I drifted away from him. The rain and wind were a little rough but it's all right. You just have to believe it's 70 and sunny. I've definitely improved running the curve." Midview senior Jeff Wirth earned meet MVP honors on the boys side with meet-record throws in shot put and discus. Wirth threw the shot 57-4.5 to break the 2023 meet record of 53-5 held by Vermilion's Hayden Valenti. Wirth eclipsed Valenti's 2023 meet record of 145-6 for discus with a 151-3. "I'm extremely happy with them," said Wirth. "I knew it was going to be bad weather but you can't have a band mindset when you're going into it. I told myself that it was OK and just went for it. My discus throw was a PR by 4 feet and for shot put it was a PR by 4 feet, as well. "With all this I still need to stay humble. Even though I PRd and set meet records I can't get arrogant or overconfident. I need to stay in the mindset of keep pushing myself." Wirth wasn't the only Midview thrower to have a strong performance. Senior Isabel Geyer won the girls shot put with a meet-record and personal-record 37-7. She also won discus with 100-6. "I first started throwing in the eighth grade not expecting much," said Geyer. "If my eighth-grade self could see this from now, she would be pretty surprised. She would be very proud. I took lessons over the summer and all the work I've put in since last year the growth really shows." The Vermilion girls finished fifth for the second year in a row to lead area teams with 73 points. Midview (68) was sixth while defending champ Oberlin (40) was seventh, although the Phoenix scratched from a number of events. Vermilion senior Brooke Whisenant was among the local standouts on the track for the girls side. A 2025 Division II state qualifier in the 400, Whisenant was second in the 100 (12.67) and 400 (1:00.72), plus third in the 200 (26.79). She teamed with Jazlyn Rayl, Morgan Frenk and Addison Williams for a second in the 1,600 relay (4:32.19). "I was expecting a little bit more from myself, but I like running with good competition. It pushes me," said Whisenant. "I'm excited for the rest of the season. I definitely like the 400. It's definitely challenging. It hurts the most, but I think that's what makes me excited to be good at it. I want to do better than last year. Obviously I'm planning on being on that podium (at state) at the end of the year." Oberlin senior Olivia Hudson defended her meet title in the 400 (59.72), leading Whisenant wire-to-wire.
