Jose Ramirez living the dream in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — Very few players spend their entire career with one team. Very few players are Jose Ramirez. Ramirez's desire to remain in Cleveland has been well-documented and was proved when he bypassed a higher salary on the free agent market to sign a team-friendly, long-term contract extension. "You always dream of playing for the team that drafts you for the rest of your career," manager Stephen Vogt said Saturday. "That's what every player wants. And I think very few people actually have that reality, just with the way the game works. But everybody wants different things. "For Hosey to be able to wear the same uniform his whole career, he's going to eclipse probably almost every record that has been set here because he's that good and for that long. So it's a dream come true for most players and it's really fun to watch Hosey live it out." Ramirez made his major league debut in 2013 but it took awhile for him to solidify himself in the big leagues. After beginning the season as the starting shortstop in 2015, he was demoted to the minors and said Friday he didn't truly feel like he had arrived until 2018. Once Ramirez found his footing, he ascended to an elite level. He's a seven-time All-Star. "It takes time," Vogt said. "You got to go through a bunch of different experiences. You got to see what works, what doesn't work. 'How do I survive? How do I do different things?' And the league figures you out real quick and you got to be able to make adjustments to combat that. To play for as long as Hosey has, he's been able to make adjustments. He's been able to continue to get better. You have to get better. You can't just stay the same, because the league gets better every year and Hosey's been able to do that. "In that 2016, 2017 time, it was kind of like, how do you get this guy out? There's just no good way," remembered Vogt, who was in the midst of his career as a catcher in the American League. "I didn't play against him for a few years, because I was in the National League, and coming back and seeing him in 2022, it wasn't fair. There was nowhere to get him out. There were no holes, and just super impressed by how he played the game." At 1,617 games, Ramirez is on the verge of passing Terry Turner (1,619) to become the franchise leader in the category. "That's unreal," rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter said. "I mean, that's something that ... I'm not sure what the numbers look like on the other clubs and stuff like that, but it's going to be tough to top for a long time. So just the consistency, just the clean head, just the ability to come out every single day and be one of the best players on the field for a long time is something truly special." Doctor's office Reliever Hunter Gaddis (forearm) has made three rehab appearances for Triple-A Columbus, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 2 1/3 innings. "Another outing, check the box ... getting him built up, but he's feeling good and that's all we care about right now," Vogt said. "Those outings are more about the buildup and the number of pitches as opposed to the results." Moving around Vogt said Steven Kwan will continue to play center and left without a primary spot in the outfield. "I think Kwany wants to do whatever's going to help us win that night," Vogt said. "He's going to be playing both, going back and forth. We don't know how it's going to ultimately shake out, but just with the way our roster's built, it's huge having the ability to go back and forth." The voice The Guardians released a statement saying longtime public address announcer Bob Tayek will be away from Progressive Field for at least the first half of the season to deal with health challenges. Tayek is expected to return to the role for his 27th season. A team of interim PA announcers will be employed in his absence.
