Track and Field: Avon girls take title, boys second at Shoremen Invitational

AVON LAKE — Avon almost managed to bring home a pair of team titles at the Avon Lake Invitational on Saturday. The girls were the top team with 122 points while the boys finished second at 86.5, which was 13 points behind Walsh Jesuit. Overall, four girls from the area combined to win seven individual events while three boys from the area took first in their respective events. Ally Brediger had a banner day for Avon. The sophomore who took second in the 100 and 200 meters at the 2025 Division I state meet brought home three titles — the 100, 200 and 400. Her wins in the 100 and 200 were straightforward at 12.16 and 25.53 seconds, but she needed a photo finish in the 400 to hold off a stiff challenge from Chardon's Madisyn Frost and Brunswick's Zaria Roberts. All three faced a strong headwind during the final stretch, and Roberts actually took the lead for a split-second during the final 25 meters, but Brediger recovered to edge both at 58.28. Just 0.11 seconds separated first from third. "I believe I've really trained for this," Brediger said. "The difference from last indoor season and this is I've had more events, I've had more meets and I've ran the 400. I feel like I'm more prepared to run more events and be whatever the team needs me. "I really do feel like the wind was something that made it harder, especially in the homestretch. But that's part of track, you have to learn how to be able to deal with any conditions and be able to work through that." Also bringing home a championship for Avon was Lauren Kershaw, who won the 3,200 in 12:26.79. Avon Lake sophomore Rileigh Scarvelli also won two events — the shot put and discus — with strong throws in each. She put up 42 feet, 7.5 inches in the shot put, which was more than a foot better than runner-up Lily Hamilton from Avon, and set a personal best with 143-7 in the discus. She broke her school record of 139.06 set when she took fifth at the state meet last spring. "It's exciting, but I think I really just have to work on my form," Scarvelli said. "I'm working on a couple of things and hopefully I get to bump up my goals. I've been looking pretty strong and I was really excited to go today because this is such a big meet. I've never won disc here before, so it's pretty exciting." Lorain's Autumn Roberts had a strong showing in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 16.48. Avon's Mia Wirks — the top seed— took second at 16.91. Roberts also finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles (52.23), was part of Lorain's 800-meter relay team that took sixth (1:53.57) and finished 10th in the long jump (13-9). "I didn't overthink and was aggressive," Roberts said. "I just want to improve my speed going over the hurdle and staying confident." Amherst had a strong showing in the pole vault, where Grady Pellittieri and Cole Lugar finished first and second, each clearing 14 feet. However, Pellittieri did so on his second attempt while Lugar advanced on his third. Neither could clear 14-6, so Pellittieri was awarded first place. The other two boys titles came from Avon. Jackson Hughes won the high jump at 6-4. Max Hauck and Jacob Abfall took first and second in the shot put, with Hauck throwing a personal-best 57-6 and Abfall 53-10. "This year I just got bigger and stronger and worked on my form," Hauck said. "Last year you had to be top 24 to make state and I was 25th. It helps a lot (to have Jacob).
