As a mom who's always trying to make every dollar count, I've found that the smartest money choices aren't always flashy, but they really do pay off in the long run. That's exactly why my middle son has decided to start his college journey at our local community college, Lorain County Community College, and honestly, I couldn't be more proud of his choice. My son's decision is a full-circle moment for me. I started my college journey at LCCC, attending for 2 years before transferring to The University of Akron to finish my degree. It was one of the best financial decisions I made, and now my son is starting his own similar path. Here's why this choice to attend locally makes so much sense for him, and for many families trying to keep college affordable: A big scholarship My son was awarded the LCCC Trustee Award, which covers up to 72 credit hours of tuition and fees over two consecutive years. That is a massive savings. Not only does this dramatically reduce the cost of college, but it also helps him avoid student loans and the pressure of working too many hours just to keep up financially. Time to figure things out (without the pressure) Like so many students, he's still undecided on his major. He is strongly leaning toward a career in the trade industry, but isn't quite sure which one to choose. Community college gives him the flexibility to explore different classes and career paths, without the high price tag of a four-year university, while he figures it out. Living at home Room and board costs can add up fast. By living at home, he'll save thousands each year, not to mention still getting home-cooked meals and free laundry. That's a win-win if you ask me. Saving on gas and time One of the biggest perks? LCCC is just a few miles from our house. He can get to campus in minutes, saving both gas money and time. No long drives, no worrying about traveling back and forth on weekends or holidays, it's all right here. Lower tuition costs We've seen firsthand how tuition costs vary. My oldest son attends Bowling Green State University, and tuition there, as with most state schools, is significantly higher. This can put a strain on kids and their families when deciding how to pay. Thankfully, my oldest son's tuition is almost free after scholarships, and his room and board are also covered since he is a resident adviser. He specifically chose this path to lower his out-of-pocket expenses and avoid taking on large loans. Smaller classes, more support LCCC offers smaller, more intimate classes, which can make a big difference, especially in those first couple of years. It's easier to ask questions, connect with professors, and build confidence academically. While smaller may not be what everyone is looking for, this is exactly what my son wants. Plus, with clubs and organizations still being offered on campus, he'll still be able to choose his level of involvement. Flexible pathways for the future Starting at a community college doesn't limit options; it actually keeps them open. Whether he chooses to choose their popular University Partnership Program and stay on to finish his four-year degree at LCCC, transfer later to a four-year university off-campus, complete a certification, or pursue a trade, he'll have a strong and affordable foundation to build on. At the end of the day, college isn't one-size-fits-all. For our family, we have chosen two different paths that make the most financial and logistical sense for both of our sons.
