Track and Field: Firelands sweeps boys and girls titles on record-setting day at Cloverleaf meet

WESTFIELD TWP. — Records fell at a fast and furious pace and the Firelands boys and girls swept the team awards at the Cloverleaf Early Bird Relays on Saturday. Despite snow flurries in the morning and temperatures hovering just above freezing all day, local athletes proved ready to break the ice on another outdoor track and field season. While the day belonged to the Falcons, North Ridgeville and Keystone had plenty to cheer about as well at Gene Clark Stadium. On the boys side, Firelands broke its first record in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdles. Alex Duke, Nikolas Zagar, Brody Born and Evan Meszaros broke the record Firelands set last year (1:06.15) with a time of 1:04.22, which just barely edged the North Ridgeville quartet of Marco Farago, Luke Bartell, Aiden Hughes and Girish Dutta (1:04.35). The Falcons followed with a win in the 4x200 behind Andrew Pawlak, Aiden Simms, Ayden Fortner and Colton Clough, who pulled a muscle in his upper leg as he made the final push on his anchor leg but still set the meet record in 1:30.77. "I'm very excited for what's to come," Clough said. "A 1:30 and we have plenty to work on with that relay. I've got to get healthy now, because I just pulled something, but there's definitely more to come." In the field events, Lukas Grisez broke the meet pole vault record by clearing 13 feet to lead Firelands to the team title in the event. In the discus, Brett Beury broke the meet record with a toss of 166 feet, 2 inches, and Firelands finished second to Buckeye. Firelands also won the final boys event of the day, taking the 4x4 with Pawlak, Fortner, Vanderpool and Clough (3:29.32). The Keystone boys also broke a series of records, starting with the first event on the track, the 4x1,600. Craig Stroud, Sam McConoughey, Jamie Yuronich and Eli McConoughey crossed the line in 19:18.67 "I feel like we're all coming off a good indoor season," Eli McConoughey said. "We had a good cross country team in the fall, we just want to keep building on that success. We want to end it off with a bang our senior season." The McConougheys, Emory Fedor and Yuronich won the distance medley in 11:10.10. In the field, Luke Devore set a meet record of 50 feet in the shot put to lead him, Tommy Lockyer and Ethan Norris to a team title. Liam Goran followed by tying the meet record (5-10) in the high jump as the Wildcats took that win as well with Colton Cowling and Reed Grams. Finally, Fedor and Goran combined to win the triple jump (74-9). North Ridgeville got a pair of wins in sprinting events as Colton Moore, Timothy Fulton, Jayden Williams and Javon Harris won the 4x100 (44.91) and Brayden Montagu, Riley Finnerty, Samuel Kaufmann and Williams won the sprint medley (1:40.38). On the girls side, Emerson Zidar helped Firelands win the 4x100 shuttle hurdles (1:12.03) with Addison Schrader, Ava Camera and Regan Viock and the 4x200 with Jordyn Copley, Stella Frederick and Audrey Smith. "We have a lot of people hurt or sick, so I was kind of nervous at first," Smith said. "After our practices, I know no matter who we put in we're going to do a pretty good job." Firelands also got a win in the 4x800 (11:08.85) from Dilynn Copley, Gianna Camera, Natalie Smith and Emil Frenk. For North Ridgeville, Macie Miller broke the meet record with a high jump of 5-2 to lead the Rangers to the team title. North Ridgeville added a win in the long jump behind Kayleigh Thomas, Julia Klepper and Lexi Marlow. "I'm feeling very proud of my team," Thomas said. "The weather was definitely not that good, but we pulled it out." North Ridgeville also won the 4x100 (53.12) with Madelyn Kuhn, Maya Harris, Nola Edge and Mariam Othman and the 4x400 (4:24.19) with Hayleigh Cass, Amelia Klimchak, Ellie Meczka and Halle Edge.
