Man killed in Sunday shooting in Elyria identified

The man who was killed in a shooting early Sunday in Elyria has been identified as 25-year-old Nick Burkholder. Burkholder, of Barbara Street in Elyria, was identified by Lorain County Coroner Dr. Frank Miller on Monday. Miller said that Burkholder had been killed by a single gunshot wound. The Elyria Police Department also announced Burkholder's identity Monday. A release from the department sent Sunday said that Burkholder was killed by a 54-year-old in an incident near the intersection of 16th Street and Middle Avenue sometime before 3 a.m. Sunday. Capt. Bill Lantz said in a news release Sunday that the 54-year-old, who has not been identified by police, had been sitting in a truck, which had apparently broken down, near the intersection when a white SUV carrying Burkholder and several other people pulled up. "The 25-year-old male exited the SUV, approached the truck while holding an item in his hand, and opened the passenger-side door of the vehicle," Lantz said in the release. "An interaction occurred that ultimately resulted in the 25-year-old male being shot." According to police, Burkholder returned to the SUV, which drove him to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment. Burkholder died at the hospital. Police were dispatched to the scene at 2:50 a.m. and the 54-year-old was still present when they arrived. The 54-year-old was not arrested or charged on Sunday after Elyria police consulted with the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office, but the shooting is still under investigation. "The Elyria Police Department Detective Bureau continues to investigate the incident," Lantz said in a release Monday. "No criminal charges have been filed at this time, and the case remains under investigation." Chief Assistant Lorain County Prosecutor Chris Pierre said Monday that his office didn't have an official comment on the shooting, other than it was being investigated. He said prosecutors would review the results of the Elyria Police Department investigation once it was complete. According to Lorain County Common Pleas Court records, Burkholder was due to be sentenced in a felony case Wednesday in Judge Christopher Rothgery's court. The case was originally filed in August 2024, and Burkholder was later indicted on charges of violation of a protection order, domestic violence, disrupting public services and two counts of violation of a temporary protective order, all felonies. Burkholder withdrew a not guilty plea and pleaded guilty to the charges on Feb. 2. He was released from the Lorain County Jail on bond that same day.
