Gas prices are on the rise. I've seen it jump 50 cents and more in just a few hours. While we can't control the cost of gasoline, we can control how we shop for it. Over the years, I've picked up a few simple habits that help stretch my fuel budget further. Don't wait I used to be the person who waited until the gas light came on before pulling into a station. The problem with that approach? When you need gas right now, you have no choice but to pay whatever price is posted. These days, I start watching prices when my tank hits about a quarter-full. That gives me time to notice which stations are running lower prices and fill up when it makes sense. A little planning can make a big difference, especially when prices fluctuate from station to station. Use loyalty programs If you regularly drive past the same gas stations, it pays to sign up for their rewards programs. Many stations offer a few cents off per gallon or allow you to earn points toward future discounts. I frequently stop at Speedway and Sheetz, both of which offer free loyalty programs with fuel discounts and occasional perks in-store. This past weekend, I got a free 6-inch sub from Sheetz after filling up four times. If you're already buying gas there, you might as well collect the rewards. Unleaded 88 Another way I save money at the pump is by choosing Unleaded 88 when I fill up at Sheetz. It's easy to spot because it comes from the blue pump, and the savings can be significant. Often it's 30 cents cheaper per gallon than other varieties, and I've even seen it discounted by 50 cents per gallon. Not every car can use this fuel, as it is typically recommended for most vehicles made after 2001, though this may vary by manufacturer. Before using it, check your vehicle's owner's manual to be sure it's approved for your car. One other thing I've noticed is that this type of gas can burn faster than regular fuel, so it's something to consider when making your decision. Use AdvantagePay I started using the AdvantagePay option at GetGo stations a few years ago. By linking the free program to my checking account and paying with a secure PIN at the pump, I receive an instant discount on every gallon. The price drop can range from a few cents to much more, depending on the location. It's quick to set up and often brings the price down close to what you'd see at warehouse clubs, without paying an annual membership fee. Consider warehouse gas stations Warehouse clubs are known for bulk groceries, but their fuel prices can be a hidden gem. Stores like Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club often sell gasoline at lower prices than nearby stations. Saving even 15 or 20 cents per gallon adds up over the course of a year, especially for families with multiple drivers. If you're considering a membership anyway, the gas savings alone can offset a good chunk of the annual fee. Keep an eye out for discounted memberships, which these stores offer regularly. Gas prices may be out of our control, but a few small changes can make a real difference over time. Watching prices before you need to fill up, using rewards programs and taking advantage of special discounts can help keep more money in your wallet, even when the numbers on the pump keep climbing.
