Howard Craig 'Howie' Mowcomber

Howard Craig 'Howie' Mowcomber, devoted son, brother, husband, father passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the age of 78. Born September 27, 1947, he moved to Amherst as a high school freshman and became a familiar and respected presence in the community. For 53 years, Howie owned and operated Ben Franklin's dime store and Neptune's Cellar, earning a reputation as a local legend who could always find a deal and had a story ready for anyone who walked through the door. A self-described 'master of legal pad lists,' he approached both business and life with organization, persistence, and a keen eye for opportunity. His store became a gathering place where neighbors connected and friendships grew. Howie embraced life with curiosity and adventure. He traveled widely, scuba dived, and enjoyed exotic sports cars and classic muscle cars. Summer thunderstorms were a favorite spectacle, often watched with quiet appreciation. He especially loved the water, spending many hours boating and fishing on Lake Erie and an epic sailing adventure in the Virgin Islands. Family outings aboard his sailboat, Nightwind, created countless memories. His adventures included one memorable shipwreck and several occasions stuck at sea-stories he retold with humor and perspective. Known for his firm handshake and signature side hugs, Howie showed his care through simple, genuine gestures. He had a sweet tooth, a love of good food, and took pride in providing for and protecting his family. His wife, Tanny, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage, often recalled his great smile and smooth dance moves. Family remained the center of his life, and he took particular joy in time spent with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Tanny (née Davis); his son, Lee (Nella); daughters Jennifer, Laura (Jeff), and Sara (PK); and his favorite people in the world, his wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John Mowcomber (Victoria); his sisters, Sue Ellen Mowcomber and Mariclaire Spoor (Michael), his sister-in-law Marie, wife of his late brother, Tom and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and the multitude of loyal customers who enriched his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Clara Mowcomber; and his brothers, Tom and Jim. Howard will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, generosity, humor, and the lasting connections he built through family, community, and a life fully lived.
