2026 Community Art Show in Vermilion The Ritter Public Library and Arts Guild of Vermilion have announced the 2026 Community Art Show. The annual event highlights the talents of local creatives ages 18 and older living in Vermilion, Huron, Berlin Heights and Birmingham, who are invited to enter their work in the show. The show will run from April 1st through 30th at the library, with an opening reception at 6 p.m. April 9, when category winners will be announced. Monday - Local author Mark Bogner will discuss his book, "The Dreamweaver,'' at 6:30 p.m. at the Grafton-Midview Library. - Amherst Public Library trustees will hold a regular meeting at the library at 5:45 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. - The Lorain County Rural Democrats will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Grafton School, 1111 Elm Street, Grafton. The first half hour of the meeting is set aside for socializing and the formal meeting begins at 7 p.m. - The Lorain County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will feature guest speaker Beryl Prusinoski of Avon at 7 p.m. for in person/Zoom meeting. Prusinoski is a frequent speaker on historical topics, and this one will be on the vital contributions of women during World War II, specifically female journalists who defied restrictions to report from the front lines and supported the Allied victory. The pillowcases will be donated to a local chapter of the organization once they are completed and then given to children in hospitals. All supplies are provided, but you may bring your own fabric that is washed, 100 percent cotton, and does not contain glitter. Participants must bring their own sewing machine. Also speaking is Mia McDougal, Turning Point, USA Ohio representative. Guests pay $5. - The Vision Support Group will meet at the Old Firehouse Community Center, at the corner of state Route 83 and Lake Road in Avon Lake, at 11 a.m. The speaker will be Debbie Kogler, the owner of Magnifiers and More, discussing new technology for the vision impaired. The meeting is open to the public. - The Pittsfield Township Historical Society will host a presentation titled "Sergeant York in World War I" at 7 p.m. at Pittsfield Town Hall. York was the most decorated American soldier of World War I, receiving the Medal of Honor along with numerous American and foreign decorations. His life story later inspired the 1941 film "Sergeant York" starring Gary Cooper. The program will be presented by John Perry, a retired history teacher and Army officer who specializes in the study of the American combat soldier. The program is free and open to the public. - Stop in to the Avon Library branch's Create Space to make a Women's History Month bookmark using the laser engraver from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 12 and 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 13 and March 14. Saturday, March 14 - The local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is having its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. at Vermilion's Ritter Library. The meeting features guest speaker Sean Crum, who will present on famous artwork and paintings related to the American Revolution. The public is welcome. - The Oberlin Heritage Center is having a session on collecting oral histories, in conjunction with the Lorain Historical Society, from 10 a.m. to noon. Register on oberlinheritagecenter.org - Browser's Reading Buddies, which gives children ages 5 to 10 a chance to read for 20 minutes to a therapy dog, will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the North Ridgeville Library branch, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Avon Library branch and again 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the South Lorain Library branch.
