Girls Wrestling: Elyria girls bounce back to finish fifth in the state dual championships

MARYSVILLE — Elyria took two steps forward after shaking off an opening-round loss. The Pioneers lost their quarterfinal dual meet to No. 3-seeded Harrison, but bounced back with a pair of wins to take fifth at the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association girls state dual championships Saturday afternoon. Elyria, seeded sixth, defeated No. 7 Fitch 42-37 in the consolation semifinals, then No. 5 Lebanon 47-36 in the placement match. Harrison, the 2024 dual meet state champion, defeated Elyria 51-24 in the opening round. The Pioneers took seventh last year, going 1-2 as the No. 8 seed. Olentangy Orange won the championship for the second straight year, defeating Marysville 57-14 in the final. "We came out a little flat-footed against Harrison," Elyria coach Paul Felton said. "We knew that was going to be a tough match, but we also felt that we lined up pretty well with them. We came out a little flat-footed, but after that we picked it up from there. The girls got into it and everyone was having a good time." The Pioneers only won three of the 10 bouts contested against Harrison — each team benefited from two forfeits. Emilie Conley needed just 1:05 to pin Brooklyn Robinson and give Elyria a boost midway through the dual. The senior secured her 100th career win with the pin, and went on to push her career total to 102 with a perfect day. Her second pin came in just 19 seconds, but her third win was a gutsy 18-2 technical fall that required her to work through some pain in the second period. However, she secured seven points in the final 10 seconds with a takedown and a near fall, then secured a takedown in the opening 20 seconds of the third period to clinch the win. "I knew that how I perform would impact the team today," Conley said. "This is my last year and I just really wanted it. The mindset was way different this year compared to last year. I wanted to win, I wanted everything for my team." Both Jaelyn Green and Olivia Campbell also went undefeated on the day. Campbell secured a 13-10 decision against Harrison's Caiden Baird, then added two pins in the consolation bouts. Green also added two pins after needing a 14-7 decision to win her quarterfinal against Veronica Decaluwe. It was the third time the pair met this season with Decaluwe getting the best of Green in their second meeting. "I was prepared all week," Green said. "I knew I had to go out there and get it. I wasn't on my offense as much as I would like, but overall it worked out. I was ready to go, ready to take my shots. I just got out there, shot and the rest is history." Elyria went 13-8 in the consolation matches that did not result in a forfeit, but both bouts were hanging in the balance with four matches to go. Fitch's Reghan Koch flipped a 7-4 deficit into a 9-7 decision against Seraiah Jackson to cut Elyria's lead to 31-30 with three bouts left, but back-to-back pins from Kira Maassen and Khloee Washington at 190 and 235, respectively, secured the win. Lebanon secured a pin with four bouts left to take a 30-29 lead, but Maassen again secured a pin at 190 and the Pioneers secured forfeits at 235 and 100 to clinch the win (the dual started at 110 pounds). "I tell the girls all the time you have to put losses in the past," Felton said. "You have to forget about it and move on to the next one. We talk about it all the time in practice. We're going to have bad days at practice, but you have to figure it out because if you're not wrestling good you have to figure it out in the middle of the match."
