High School Roundup: Elyria Catholic hockey takes 4-0 lead, then holds off Mentor

MENTOR — Elyria Catholic snuck in one more hockey game to get ready for the upcoming state tournament at Bowling Green State University and came away with a 5-4 win over Mentor in a possible Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Red Division matchup next season. EC (20-10) scored the first four goals of the game. Luke Shebak (Josh Anastasiadis assist) scored at 8:43 and Zachary Basinger (Brady Basinger assist) followed with a goal at 0:51 to take a 2-0 lead after one period. The Panthers pushed the lead to 4-0 midway through the second on goals from JoJo Jancsura (B. Basinger assist) and Anastasiadis (Shebak assist), before Mentor (14-15-3) started clawing back in. Mentor's Will Norris and Zach Ulshafer cut EC's led to 4-2 with goals at 6:41 and 3:49 of the second to cut the EC lead to 4-2, before Shebak scored his second of the game on assists from Anastasiadis and Charlie Grimes with just 19 seconds left on the second-period clock. The Cardinals got third period goals from Joe Mackey and Nick Bion Dolillio to cut EC's lead to one, but Dominic Morris stood tall in goal with 10 of his 29 saves coming in the third period to help preserve the win.
