Elyria police arrest 30 in "Operation Sub Zero" sweep

Elyria police announced Monday that they had made 30 arrests as a part of a winter drug and violent crime enforcement action they called "Operation Sub Zero." According to a release from the Elyria Police Department, the operation spanned from Jan. 1 to Feb. 6 and resulted in 30 arrests as well as the seizure of 3.75 ounces of drugs and 14 guns, two of which were stolen. "Operation Sub Zero sends a clear message that even in sub-freezing temperatures, we maintain zero tolerance for violence, drugs, and weapons offenses in Elyria," Police Chief James Welsh said in the release. "Cold weather does not stop violent crime, and it will not stop us. We remain relentless in our enforcement efforts, and nothing will stand in our way of protecting this community." The charges made against those arrested in the operation ranged from misdemeanors like possession of drug paraphernalia to felonies for both drug possession and violent crimes like aggravated riot and domestic violence. Of those arrested, 26 face at least one felony charge in Elyria. The release said that the effort was "all-hands-on-deck" and included assistance from the department's Neighborhood Impact Unit, Narcotics Unit, Detective Bureau, Patrol Division and Special Response Team. Seven residential search warrants were carried out during the operation. "I'm proud of the work our police officers and law enforcement partners did during Operation Sub Zero," Mayor Kevin Brubaker said in the release. "The Elyria Police Department and my administration remain committed to reducing violent crime and removing those who commit such acts from our streets."
