North Ridgeville man gets 30 years in prison for trading in child sex abuse images

ELYRIA — A North Ridgeville man was sentenced Monday to at least 30 years in prison for downloading, possessing and sharing images and videos of children being sexually abused. Paul Kuznik, 41, of Pleasant Street, sobbed through a rambling apology before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Melissa Kobasher sent him to prison for 30 to 311/2 years and labeled him a Tier II sex offender. He pleaded guilty to 10 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor or impaired person in December. The charges did not merge for sentencing. Kobasher said she struggled to come up with an appropriate sentence, noting that Kuznik's mental health obviously contributed to his crimes. "I would just like to apologize," Kuznik said through tears. "I'm sorry to anyone that this might have affected. I understand the weight of it." He said he never intended to contribute to "the business" of sharing illegal images of children online and always wanted to help young people, not hurt them. Kobasher pointedly asked how uploading and sharing images of child sexual abuse and allegedly soliciting a teenage boy for photos was helping young people. Kuznik said he understood the two things were contradictory. He then gave a rambling, four-minute statement that didn't answer the judge's question. Kobasher interrupted him. "I'm failing to understand how helping youth and the community by trying to buy, sell, trade and have possession of (images of) pre-pubescent males engaging in sexual activity, how those two things are somehow related?" she said. "I don't need to make much sense of it, certainly that's what you really need to work on." Defense attorney Ken Nelson, who asked Kobasher to allow his client to remain out of prison on community control, said Kuznik is an accomplished singer who performed the national anthem at events in Cleveland. "This case is certainly not at all in his character," Nelson said. Kuznik recently finished cancer treatment and was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Nelson said both of those conditions played a role in his crimes. "He's accepted responsibility. He's actively addressing, I think, the causes for that" in mental health treatment, Nelson said. Assistant Lorain County Prosecutor Jonathan Block said Kuznik turned himself in to police and admitted to downloading and trading 20 illegal images with 22 other online users. The Prosecutor's Office previously said the crimes happened on the file sharing service Kik over five months between mid-August and mid-December 2024. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and North Ridgeville Police Department investigated. Kuznik originally was indicted on 64 total felony charges, including 22 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor or impaired person; 20 counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor or impaired person; 20 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance; and one count each of tampering with evidence and possession of criminal tools. Prosecutors dismissed 54 of those charges as part of a plea agreement. Kuznik said he plans to appeal his sentence and Nelson asked the judge to appoint another attorney to handle the appeal.
