Commentary: LeBron James and Donovan Mitchell together. Could you imagine?

Has there ever been anything like this before? In any sport? At any time? Ever? The answer is no. Because LeBron James is one of a kind, and as crazy as it sounds, he is still not done. "The Chosen One" still stands. He was born in Akron, lived, for a time, in Miami, and then California. He climbed every climbable basketball mountain, until there were no more to climb. But he is STILL climbing. Still doing what others can't. He went away for a time, but then came back, and almost single-handedly won the only championship trophy any Cleveland team had won in 58 years. Right here. Alone. The whole incredible story started here, and it may or may not end here. Only he knows. The rest of us — identified only by our countless dropped jaws — are merely window dressing. The memories, however, endure. He and they will always endure, especially the special ones, when he was so much younger then. He's older than that now. As are we. But we and he were always there, even when he took his talents to South Beach, but especially when he brought them back to Cleveland as the Grandest Grand Marshall of the greatest Cleveland championship parade ("BLOCKED BY JAMES!!!") in the city's history. Does the name Andre Iguodala ring a bell? Go ahead, admit it. Chills? Still. "CLEVELAND!!! "THIS IS FOR YOU"!!!! After the parade, he and we got on with our lives, pursuing wins and parades we never could have chased without him — especially when he moved to California without us. He and we are older now. He doesn't routinely do the kind of things that, in his prime, made fans wish they were him. To this day we never saw this coming, and even if we did, we wouldn't have believed it. We didn't then, and we still don't now. We never saw this coming, because nobody did, to this degree, anyway, and we have no idea where it's going. But it is sure going to be a lot of fun. Unless LeBron retires. He wouldn't dare, would he? At age 41 he is still a pup, and, as he pointed out following the Cavs' win over the Lakers on Wednesday, his mother, who was at the game, could watch her son and her grandson playing in the same NBA game. Again: who but LeBron could pull that off? By now The Chosen One has seemingly climbed every NBA mountain there is to climb. Or has he? What if there is a mountain out there that nobody, not even Sam Merrill, has yet to climb? Who else but The Chosen One would even contemplate trying to climb? Well, uh, duh! How about LeBron? The only NBA player so athletically gifted and challenged by such a challenge. Could LeBron actually come back to Cleveland next year and help lead the current version of the Cavs into a version of the Cavs that nobody could even contemplate? For example, oh, I don't know, how about coming back to Cleveland as a player and leading the Cavs to another NBA championship? Talk about Cinderella, "Cleveland! This Is For You Again!" moment. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house. Think about it. LeBron and Donovan Mitchell leading charge after charge down the court in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, with the exquisite Mike Breen at the mike! These are the kind of things they make movies about. "Oh, wait," says Breen at the start of the fourth quarter of Game 7 of the NBA Finals, "Darius Garland is being replaced by Bronny James! Listen to that crowd!" So, to review, you could potentially have LeBron and Donovan galloping down the court, sharing the ball — on a fastbreak, in an opponents' worst nightmare — with the crowd going wild. What opponent would want a piece of that action late in the fourth quarter? "CLEVELAND! THIS IS FOR YOU!" Again! Talk about drama. The fans in the stands would be wheeping. At the very least, it is a scenario worth contemplating. LeBron and Mitchell sharing the ball on a fastbreak late in the fourth quarter has all kinds of cinematic potential. Needless to say, following Wednesday's game, LeBron was asked by reporters if he might be interested in coming back to play one final season with the Cavs, to sort of put a bow on his extraordinary career. He was predictably noncommittal, but one could only imagine, on the Cavs' first home game next season, how raucous the Rock could get, late in the game, with LeBron and Mitchell on the court together, racing down the floor while contemplating all sorts of offensive mayhem.
