Abusive boyfriend gets life in prison, parole eligibility after 28 years in Katlyn Kurtz's 2024 Eaton Twp. murder (VIDEO)

ELYRIA — An Eaton Township man prosecutors said abused and threatened his girlfriend for months before murdering her in their home in 2024 will spend the better part of the next three decades in prison, and probably more. A joint plea and sentencing agreement means Clifford Serafine Jr., 35, must serve at least 28 years in prison before he is eligible for parole, which is not guaranteed at that time. Katlyn Kurtz's family, Sheriff's Office investigators and the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office consented to the plea and sentencing agreement ahead of Monday's scheduled trial in Lorain County Common Pleas Court, Assistant Prosecutor Daniellela Leigh said. Judge Donna Freeman, who handed down the sentence negotiated by Leigh and defense attorneys Andrew Ortner, Kenneth Ortner and Benjamin Kleidman, said the maximum sentence Serafine faced if convicted at trial was life in prison without the possibility of parole. The plea agreement means Serafine gives up most of his rights to appeal and won't be eligible for early release. He also forfeited the gun he used in the murder. Leigh said that on May 26, 2024, Serafine was intoxicated when he dragged Kurtz out of bed in their Eaton Township home, held her down on a couch, put a gun in her mouth and pulled the trigger. Lorain County sheriff's deputies arrived at the crime scene at 12583 Melody Lane just after 11 p.m. that night. Serafine told authorities he was cleaning his gun when it accidentally went off and killed Kurtz, one of many lies Leigh said he told investigators. "This was not an accident. It was an execution that was carried out in (Kurtz's) own home with her children in bed," Leigh said, calling "the brutality of these crimes ... undeniably disturbing." Serafine was charged with and pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, kidnapping, tampering with evidence, domestic violence, possession of criminal tools and using weapons while intoxicated before changing that plea on Monday. Serafine declined to make a statement in court. The murder Leigh said Kurtz was a 29-year-old mother of three children, ages 22 months to 8 years old, who was in an abusive relationship with Serafine. The children were present when Serafine threatened their mother's life and when he shot and killed her, Leigh said. Kurtz's murder was the result of "a pattern of escalating violence, threats and ultimately a deliberate act," Leigh said. "It was no mistake, it was no accident and it was no matter of bad luck. It was a calculated decision." The safety of the home had been replaced by fear, Leigh said. Video surveillance footage from inside the home showed Serafine drinking alcohol, threatening Kurtz and physically assaulting her, she said. "'You're about to die tonight and you'd better shut up or I'll kill you,'" Leigh quoted Serafine telling Kurtz in a threat caught on Ring surveillance cameras inside the house. Kurtz had previously recorded Serafine threatening her, and Leigh played a brief portion of a 22-minute recording that Kurtz made months before her murder that investigators found on her cellphone after her death. In the recording, Kurtz begged Serafine to get help for anger issues and discussed who would care for the children if he killed her. "I want you to be better," Kurtz is heard telling Serafine on the audio. "You think the way you're talking is normal right now?" "I'll shoot you down right now. Put you down right now. It'll be done. Done," Serafine replied. "I'll do it. Tell me I won't put you down. I'll do it right now. "Right here. Right behind the ear. How the f*** are you gonna get up from that? You ain't," Serafine tells Kurtz on the recording. "So quit running your mouth to me." Leigh said Serafine's actions demonstrate "complete disregard for human life." Victim's family reacts Kurtz was survived by her three minor children, her mother Stephanie Alzaki, stepfather Ali Alzaki and brothers Braden Kurtz, Hassan Alzaki and Burair Alzaki. The five adults all spoke in court, where Katlyn Kurtz's older brother Braden Kurtz had harsh words for Serafine. "There is no excuse, no justification, no redemption for what he did," Braden Kurtz said. "I hope Cliff lives in a state of anguish and misery for the rest of his life." Serafine "is nothing but a coward that ended an innocent life and he will forever live with that truth," Braden Kurtz said. Stephanie Alzaki said she was privileged and honored to be Katlyn Kurtz's mother for 29 years until she was "senselessly and cruelly taken from me." She now has depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and insomnia caused by her daughter's murder. "There are no words that can fully express the pain of losing a child, especially in such a violent and senseless way," Stephanie Alzaki said. "The pain of her loss is something I will carry for the rest of my life." She then called Serafine a "pathetic soulless coward" who tried to control her daughter. "Justice for Katlyn is the only thing that can honor her life," Stephanie Alzaki said. Serafine "will only ever be remembered as a monster who tried to take her light away." Ali Alzaki said his wife's heart is "shattered" and her joy stolen by the loss of the daughter and closest companion. "We ask the court to remember that behind this case there is a family that will never be whole again," he said. Family gatherings have an "air of sadness" now that Katlyn Kurtz is gone, Burair Alzaki said, while Hassan Alzaki said he preferred to remember how kind his sister was and how she made him smile. "I try to be sad thinking about her but it's hard because I get super happy when I think about her because to me she was a person of comfort," Hassan Alzaki said. Katlyn Kurtz's uncle, William Wiest, who has custody of her two youngest children, also read a letter on their behalf describing how they would miss their mother. The children were "selfishly dealt a life sentence" of their own, Wiest said. Freeman offered the Kurtz and Alzaki families her sympathy. "I'm just very sorry," she said.
