Part of Elyria's East Avenue closed off as investigation continues into report of shots fired in early morning hours

Part of Elyria was closed off to the public Thursday due to an "ongoing tactical operation," according to the Elyria Police Department. In a public service announcement, Elyria Police Chief James Welsh stated that East Avenue between 16th Street and George Avenue was closed early Thursday evening due to the tactical operation in relation to a report of shots fired in the early morning hours. "Residents and motorists may notice an increased police presence in the area. Please do not be alarmed; officers are there to ensure public safety," Welsh stated. According to Elyria police, two suspects had already been placed in custody as of 5:50 p.m. Thursday. Welsh said that the investigation was "evolving rapidly" and that there was "no immediate threat to the public." No information on the identity of the suspects, nor what they were being charged with, was available Thursday evening. However, Welsh confirmed that the two suspects taken into custody were connected to a report of shots fired in the early morning hours of New Year's Day. In a previous statement earlier on Thursday, Welsh said officers and detectives were actively investigating the incident and attempting to identify and arrest individuals who may have been involved. "I want to remind everyone that discharging firearms within the Elyria city limits is a crime," Welsh said. According to the Elyria Police Department, any incident of shots being fired from a weapon is investigated. "The Elyria Police Department places the same level of resources into shots fired calls and nonfatal shootings as we do homicide investigations," Welsh said. "These are extremely dangerous incidents, and many times it is simply luck that no one is injured. Our goal is to identify, charge and arrest those responsible as quickly as possible as part of our violent crime reduction strategy." No injuries were reported in connection with the possible use of firearms Thursday morning. "We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation," Welsh said.
