High school wrestling: Host Brookside finishes third at tournament; Clearview's Noah Huston named MVP

SHEFFIELD VILLAGE — The good vibes were flowing for host Brookside and Clearview after Tuesday's third annual Brookside Brawl tournament. Each had good performances. The Cardinals finished third among 14 teams with 169.5 points, up from its 11th-place finish a year ago. Clearview was seventh with 136 points, but led the county with two individual winners, including tournament MVP Noah Huston (113 pounds). Freshman Gabe Hernandez (120), sophomore Elijah Lopez (144) and senior Braden Bowen (285) finished second to lead Brookside. "It's really a credit to the kids and my assistant coaches," said Brookside coach Jim Partrizi. "We've been wrestling well throughout the week. Today, they did an outstanding job. I couldn't be more proud of the kids and my assistants. You can see where we are taking strides. The young kids we have are progressing and our more experienced kids are progressing. That's all you can ask as we get through the grind of this part of the season. "We're not coaching for now, we're coaching for the end of February for sectionals. It's just working on the little things that can be the difference between winning and losing. To be in a position of winning going into that last round is progress." Brookside trailed Margaretta by four points, 138-134, heading into the final round, with Western Reserve right behind with 127.5. Juniors Collin Patton (190) and Jaxon Llado (215) finished fourth for Brookside. Junior Trevor Taylor (132) and freshman Grayson Mitchell (138) were fifth, while freshman Ruslan Ibragimov (120) and sophomore Dave Llanes (126) were sixth. Huston, a sophomore, was too much for No. 2 seed Wyatt Martin of South Central, last year's runner-up at 103. The top-seeded Huston rolled to a 16-3 major decision. "It shows me I'm getting better," said Huston. "It was good to get good (competition). (Martin) was tough neutral. I had to fight for everything. He was pretty strong. Today means a lot, but I need to keep working at things." Clearview's other win came from senior Kameron Williams (138), who pinned Margaretta's Trace Wilson at 1:31. "I'm happy with how I wrestled but I still need to improve my conditioning level," said Williams. "We have the Medina Invitational coming up soon (Dec. 29-30) and I need to be prepared. Last year, I missed placing at Medina by one match, so I want to be ready for it." "I'm very proud of the guys," said Clearview assistant David Cooper. "Their offense today from start to finish, they got the other guys moving and out of position. They capitalized. "They put a lot of work in over the summer and the offseason. They work very tough in the practice room. It pays dividends. The guys are very physical, they show ready to work, ready to learn." Sophomores Logan Rottari (132) and Brian Taylor (190) finished second to lead North Ridgeville. The No. 1 seed Rottari held a 7-6 lead late in the match but he got turned and pinned at 5:49 by No. 2 seed Anthony Lierenz, a Western Reserve senior. Both finished third at last year's Brookside tournament, Rottari at 126 and Lierenz at 120. "I gave it my all," said Rottari. "I just need to get my cardio up a little bit better. I need to think a little smarter next time." Taylor came up short in a 7-1 decision to Margaretta's Cohen Gahler, the fourth seed. Taylor was unseeded. Taylor also lost to Gahler, 3-2, in the first round of pool play. "I need to work harder at practice," said Taylor, a Cobos Tournament champion last year. "I just need to learn from this and push forward, short-term memory. Losses don't define me. Every trophy except first is a participation trophy."
