Commentary: Deshaun Watson is back at practice, his contract never left and all anyone can do is laugh

Hey, everybody, did you hear the news?"The Big Swing and Miss" is back!Listen to that crowd!! …Hey, crowd, come on, help us out here … (crowd yawns).That's right, Dawg Pounders everywhere, our long, civic, $230 million gridiron nightmare is over … unless it's not.Either way, we win, and even if we lose, we win. Talk about bargain shopping!For Browns fans, it has been a long and glorious wait for Cleveland's most expensive nobody to return to the huddle, buckle his chinstrap and get on with the winning, the whining and the wooing.Are you guys all in?Me neither.Do you want to know who is all out?That's right! It's Mr. Quarterback himself. Deshaun Watson. Good, old Deshaun Watson is in the news again. It has been a long time since he led arguably the worst team in the NFL out of the huddle and up to the line of scrimmage.But after two Achilles surgeries, followed by months of rehab, on Wednesday, The One, The Only Deshaun Watson was moved from the physically unable to perform list to the physically able to perform list. More or less. (He returned to practice.)That's a lot of moving around for a quarterback who, in the last couple of years, hasn't been moving around as much as he would like, due to his annual bouts with various injuries.In the meantime, Watson's history-making contract with the Browns is a contract that has not produced much gaiety in Haslam Acres. So much so that the quarterback that was supposed to be has, in the last few years, been no quarterback at all.And at such a sensationally outlandish contract that Browns owners can't help but chuckle at their wayward attempt to sign a quarterback unworthy of the contract. No quarterback in history had anything close to Watson's contract, which, at its signing, was the biggest chunk-o-change ever given any quarterback in the history of grossly overpaid quarterbacks.So much so, that at one point during the backwash of his ill-advised pursuance of a grossly overpaid quarterback, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam tweaked himself by labeling the failed quarterback in the owner's colossal transaction "a big swing and miss."Jimmy Haslam, ladies and gentlemen!"Bah-dum-bum."Barring any unforeseen shenanigans between now and whenever Watson's last official day with the Browns takes place, the owner's hilarious, ill-advised — dare we say "colossally amateurish"? — attempt at hitting a home run turned out to be more of a water balloon, the kind more Browns owners than not have foolishly tossed off their balconies, when nothing else seemed to work.Indeed, "A Big Swing and Miss" would be a terrific title for a movie, whenever the final chapter of Browns history gets written.For now, however, it continues to be business as usual for a franchise that never saw a pie in the face that it couldn't absorb, or return.The Browns' current ownership has seen to that, in spades. The harder it tries, the more goobery it gets. I know, "goobery" is not a word. So what? The Browns are barely a team.They are barely a team, but it says here that some professional sports teams can be both entertaining and losers. Don't laugh. Sometimes "losers" carry the day, because they have to.There is nothing funny about not being funny. Just as there is nothing funny about one of the only teams to have never played in the Super Bowl, much less won it.I would even postulate that "The Big Swing" might still be in vogue, given that one of the only NFL teams to have never played in the Super Bowl, much less won it, continues to not win any Super Bowls in Cleveland.Whose fault is that?Everyone's and no one's.That's the beauty of sports, but don't go looking for it in these parts. Winning doesn't live here anymore.Trying to win sometimes rears its ugly head, but who wants a piece of that, right?Why not laugh instead?The Big Swing and Miss?Now that's a rare Jimmy Haslam rim shot that drummers from the heyday of drumming would love to bah-da-boom!Coach Haslam — I know, he's not the coach, but at last glance I'm not sure the Browns have one. What the owner might be, however, and what he should probably be is a gag man.I don't know about you, but for me, labeling the failed Watson "a big swing and miss" is delightful.
