Boys basketball: North Ridgeville falls to Gilmour at Cleveland Basketball Classic

BEREA — Facing an active, extended 2-3 zone Sunday afternoon, North Ridgeville fell 61-42 to Gilmour at the Cleveland Basketball Classic at Baldwin Wallace. The Rangers (1-1) struggled hanging onto the ball and finding open looks, turning the ball over nine times in the opening half, which proved costly, as several of those miscues were turned into points by the Lancers (1-0). A 9-2 run to begin the second quarter built Gilmour's lead to 25-11 on a Brayden Titas 3-pointer. A three by North Ridgeville senior guard Duke Baker cut the lead to 27-16 in the second quarter, but Gilmour scored the next four points. A Colton Mack layin at the halftime buzzer cut the lead to 33-21. "I thought our decisions weren't great," North Ridgeville coach Ben Chase said. "Really, it's on me. I gave them about 30 to 40 minutes the last couple days of zone offense prep in practice, so didn't have a zone baseline out-of-bounds play today. I didn't think we were going to see zone for 32 minutes, so that part was on me, but we also missed a lot of open shots that we got." Back-to-back baskets by sophomore Mason Allison to begin the fourth quarter cut the Gilmour lead to 48-40. Allison finished with 10 points. But the Lancers ripped off seven straight points on a Caleb Henderson layin, a back-door layup by Brody Durham and a three from Titas to extend the lead to 55-40. Henderson was in the middle of the interior action for Gilmour, as the burly 6-foot-3 junior had 15 points and kept several possessions alive with offensive rebounds. Gilmour dominated on the glass with a whopping 44-20 advantage, which included several on the offensive side. "Rebounding, I believe, is 100 percent effort," Chase said. "You either wanna go rebound or you don't. I think tactically we were getting beat so bad off the ball, off the dribble, so when their shot went up, we were in not great rebounding position. So when you're not in a great rebounding position, and then you don't obviously compete as hard as you can on the glass, things are going to go wrong, and they got an incredible amount of offensive rebounds and second-chance points today." North Ridgeville was led by junior guard Luke Rowe with 11 points, Allison with 10 and junior Colton Mack with 10. The Rangers shot just 37 percent and only had six points in the fourth quarter. North Ridgeville was just 5-of-24 from beyond the 3-point line. The Rangers were coming off a win over Lorain in at the DiFranco Memorial Classic on Wednesday. "We did not play to our standard," Chase said. "We did not play to our expectation. We didn't compete as hard as we did on Wednesday. There was a big drop off between Wednesday's competitiveness and today, which is really disappointing. I didn't expect that. We'll make sure we correct that for Tuesday."
