Sheffield Police lieutenant Aaron Bober dies after medical emergency

Aaron Bober, a lieutenant with the Sheffield Police Department, died after suffering an unspecified medical emergency on Friday, county officials announced Saturday on social media. What the medical emergency was, wasn't revealed publicly Saturday. Messages were left for Sheffield Police Chief William Visalden and for Sheffield Mayor Bob Markovich. Without naming the officer, Visalden said Friday that a member of his department had suffered a medical emergency and had been taken to University Hospitals in Cleveland for treatment. Bober was promoted to lieutenant in 2020 and had been a detective with the department. The Lorain County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that Bober also was a sworn deputy sheriff assigned to the Northern Border Initiative, which patrols Lake Erie. Condolences filled Lorain County first responders' social media pages on Saturday. "Sheffield Village has lost a unique soul," the Sheffield Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post. "Aaron was an exceptional police officer who was proud to serve the community he grew up in, the community he loved." "If you knew Aaron you know what a character he was, but at his core and most importantly Aaron was a loving father, husband and a good man," the fire department wrote. "Our hearts break for his family, for his friends, for our brothers and sisters in blue and for the community we serve. Peaceful rest Aaron, you will be missed." The sheriff's office likewise posted condolences, as did the county prosecutor's office. "To our brothers and sisters at Sheffield Village Police Department, we stand with you in this difficult time," the sheriff's office wrote, while Prosecutor Tony Cillo wrote that Bober's sudden passing "is deeply felt across our law enforcement community and throughout Lorain County." Sheffield police mourned earlier this year when a former officer was shot and killed in the line of duty with the Lorain Police Department. The village last month dedicated a monument outside the police station on Colorado Avenue to Lorain police Officer Phillip Wagner, who died of injuries suffered in a July 23 on-duty ambush. Two other officers were wounded, and the shooter was shot and killed by police. Wagner was a Sheffield police officer from 2018 to 2022.
