Avon's Londyn Stone caps wonderful stretch with Miss Volleyball

AVON LAKE — Londyn Stone saved her best for last. Stone was named Lorain County Miss Volleyball on Monday night at the annual Seniors Night at Avon Lake. Stone was already over the moon over Avon's state championship Sunday at Wright State University. Stone led the Eagles (27-1) past top-ranked Anthony Wayne (26-2) in four sets to bring home the county's first state championship in volleyball. Stone tied her season high in kills with 21 during the match. At the state tournament, she recorded 38 kills. "It was definitely a very memorable weekend," said Stone. "To be in the state championship and be able to win it is something that we talked about since the beginning of this year. It was our big goal for the end of the year. To be able to do that and accomplish that was everyone's dream come true. It was very surreal to say the least." Stone, who will attend Duquesne next year on a volleyball scholarship, put the finishing touches on a brilliant career with the Miss Volleyball award. She's the sixth winner from Avon. The award has been presented since its inception in 1985 by Burger King. "That's the award that Londyn has wanted since she was little," said Avon coach Kara Coffman. "She's very well-deserving of it. Winning (Sunday) and this, Londyn's probably going to go crazy. She's so excited, so happy." "I was definitely not expecting that at all," said Stone. "Definitely puts a cherry on top of all of this. I am very grateful for sure. It was something I talked about as my goal for the end of this year, and to have people think of me as someone deserving of that award, very grateful." Teammate Lily Hamilton was awarded a rare "Special Mention" from the Miss Volleyball committee. "I was shocked, I didn't even know what was going on," Hamilton said. "Where do I go? What do I do? It was really nice that they thought of me and recognized me." "That was awesome," said Coffman. "There's nobody more deserving than Lily. She's an amazing person and an amazing player." Stone proved to be very versatile for the Eagles with 1,308 kills, 936 digs, 101 aces and 89 block-kills in her career. As a senior, she had 331 kills, 278 digs, 40 aces and 16 blocks. Her team scored 695 points off her serves and she was one of the best as a serve receiver for the Eagles. In her last three years, Avon won 76 matches and lost only six. In her last three matches, Avon defeated No. 4 Wadsworth, No. 2 Magnificat and No. 1 Anthony Wayne. The Eagles lost the services of senior Bethany Sherwood during the title match, but Stone and her teammates picked up the slack. "When Bethany went down, it was definitely heartbreaking for all of us," said Stone. "But that just kind of fueled the fire in all of us to say we're going to step up and play for her.
