Avon players showered with all-district football honors

Avon won state championships in boys soccer and volleyball Sunday and the Eagles decided to keep the good times rolling Monday afternoon as they landed seven football players on the All-Northeast Lakes district first team and swept the special awards. Senior quarterback Blake Elder was named the Division II Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Ryan Stolarski was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Mike Elder, Blake's father, was named the Coach of the Year. "Well, that's awesome stuff," Mike Elder said. "I'm excited for all of our kids, and I think our players know that these are team awards. If your team's successful and you do well, obviously you can get some individual recognition as well. For me personally, the coach of the year thing is always a reflection of our entire staff and obviously the great players they get to coach, so I'm honored and accept that on behalf of our entire coaching staff. With regards to the players of the year, both of those guys have had tremendous years, and I'm super proud of both of them." Also earning all-district special awards were Wellington senior linebacker Trey Moore, who was named the Division V Defensive Player of the Year, and Columbia's Mike Rice, who was named the Division VI Coach of the Year. The Eagles, who won the Division II state championship last season and will be competing in the regional semifinals Friday, were well represented on the all-district first team, with seniors Jakob Weatherspoon, Max Hauck, Grant Barr, Lance Dawson and Eian Englehart joining Blake Elder and Stolarski. Blake Elder, who took over the offense this season after waiting behind Nolan Good the past three years, was 129-of-191 passing – 68 percent – for 2,134 yards and 26 touchdowns with just three interceptions during the regular season. He only carried the ball 16 times for 87 yards, but was agile enough to be sacked just three times. "I've been with the program for so long, so I know that some players have to wait their turn, and that was me," Elder said. "I'm just super blessed. I took advantage of my opportunity this year and I think I'm doing the best I can. "I think we couldn't have done it without everyone around us, like my offensive line, my receivers. I have to give someone the ball to get this recognition." Stolarski, who will play football at Miami of Ohio next season, finished with 58 tackles, six quarterback pressures, seven tackles for loss, six sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries during the regular season. Mike Elder called him Avon's top defensive player and the 6-2, 227-pound senior was constantly making the big plays when called upon. "I knew I was going to have a better year than I did last year and I knew what I needed to work on during the offseason," Stolarski said. "So I think I've had a good regular season but the job's clearly not finished. I've got to keep working. I feel like most people have a weakness and I feel like I don't really have too many weaknesses. So, yeah, (versatility) is one of my strengths." Nearly every team in the county was able to land players on the first team and multiple players on the all-district list. Moore stood out after finishing with 148 tackles – 7.5 for a loss – two sacks, six quarterback pressures, a forced fumble and four pass breakups. He also rushed for 438 yards and three touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 66 yards on offense. "It just feels good because of all the hard work we've put in and it's showing," Moore said. "Really since junior high lifting with Coach (Rob) Howells … so it feels like a good way to wrap up my high school career. "My sophomore year I got hurt, so I put a lot of time in getting ready for my junior year and I was able to put the hammer down and then I had another good season this year. I watched the guys that were older than me and took some of the things they did and tried to be the best role model I could be when it was my turn to be a leader." Rice was named the district's top D-VI leader in just his second year running the Raiders program. Columbia went 9-1 during the regular season, won the Lorain County League championship and landed four players on the all-district first team. "I thought we had a really good year, faced some adversity and a lot of kids stepped up," Rice said. "It's an honor but I owe a lot of that to our coaching staff which does such a great job. Without them we couldn't do what we do and I certainly respect that and feel honored to have been chosen. "I truly just love being around these guys and around the sport, and love the process of preparing each week and the routine of it all. It's a joy every day to go to work." The All-Ohio awards are still to come and Avon and North Ridgeville – which finished with four first-teamers and three second-teamers – still have some season yet to play. The recognition is appreciated but Mike Elder knows that the all-district teams are about the destination, not the journey. "I think what a lot of people don't see is why they become great players," he said. "It's all the hard work behind the scenes that our guys are willing to do, the buy-in they have in our program that allows them to have these honors. They've certainly earned it with all kinds of hard work and dedication and they were willing to put in that time and effort to make themselves into great football players."
