Columbia Schools superintendent to retire in 2027

COLUMBIA TWP. – Columbia Schools Superintendent Graig Bansek will retire Jan. 1, 2027. Bansek announced his decision to leave the district he has worked in for 23 years in a letter to the school board and district community. "This district has been so much more than a place of work for me," Bansek wrote. "It has been a family, a home, and a community that I am deeply proud to be a part of. Throughout my time as superintendent, we have faced challenges and celebrated victories together … I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the experiences, memories and people who have made this journey so special." Bansek joined Columbia Schools as a principal in 2004, and became superintendent in 2009. He said being in Columbia Schools has been "the best ride of my life." "I am both blessed and fortunate to have spent my career in a place where I am happy when I arrive, happy when I leave and grateful for everything in between," he wrote. "Columbia has truly become part of who I am — the friendships, memories and moments of shared purpose will stay with me long after I leave this office." Bansek has made no formal announcement, but his personal X account identifies him as a candidate for the Ohio House in the 52nd District. That seat is currently held by Gayle Manning, who cannot run again due to term limits. Her son Nathan, currently a state senator who can't run again for that seat due to term limits, has announced a bid for that House seat in 2026 as a Republican. Bansek will not be alone in his retirement. Treasurer Patricia Eddy also will retire from the district Jan. 1, 2027. The date marks the end of the current contracts for both officials. In a news release announcing the pair's notices to retire, its Board of Education noted Bansek has been "instrumental in building a culture within our schools that truly reflects the values of our community." Similarly, Eddy has been "a reliable and steady presence" during her 16 years as district treasurer. "While the departure of these two key individuals will certainly have an impact on our district, it also presents an opportunity to bring in new leaders who will carry forward the important work Graig and Pat have so passionately led," the board statement said.
