Keystone sweeps boys, girls Lorain County League cross country meet

HENRIETTA TWP. — It was all Keystone on Saturday morning at the Lorain County League cross country meet as the Wildcats swept the boys and girls individual titles and won the boys team championship. Wildcats sophomore Jamie Yuronich won the boys race with a time of 16:24.8, 26 seconds ahead of Black River's Connor Rhein. "I've always placed third at conference, since 7th grade," Yuronich said. "So I'm just so happy I could finally get it done. I've been running more miles this year, and I've been focusing on the one percent stuff like sleep, nutrition and hydration, so that's really helped me." After Rhein in second, Keystone rounded out the rest of the top five with Eli and Sam McConoughey finishing third and fourth and Craig Stroud taking fifth. "The hard work of the summer is coming together," Eli McConoughey said. "We were hoping for a little more, but the team showed up well today, and I think we'll bounce back even better in the coming weeks to get to the state meet." On the girls side, Keystone freshman Amme Wilson took the individual race with a time of 20:58.2, beating out Firelands junior Dilynn Copley and Wellington senior Lauren Vannatter. "I knew I needed to drop about 40 seconds, so I just had to stick with it and push through," Wilson said. "I usually kind of stick in the back and push on the last half, but this time I tried to go out with the front." The biggest drama of the day came in the girls team standings, as Firelands finished just two points ahead of rival Oberlin to take the conference title for the second consecutive year, this time at its home course. "The whole year, we knew it was going to be us and Oberlin," Copley said. "It's always us and Oberlin in the different running sports, so we just knew we had to come out and compete with them." Firelands has now taken the top spot over Oberlin at the LCL meet two years in a row, and when combined with their battles on the track, it has fostered quite the rivalry between the two schools. "We have the two best running programs in the conference," Copley said. "So we knew, ever since track, when we won, they were mad about that. We knew they wanted to come out here and try to beat us in cross country, but we just had to keep pushing." Outside of winners Keystone and Firelands, the best day belonged to Black River, which took second on the boys side and third on the girls side and had two top-10 individual finishers in each race.
