H.S. Football: Team effort propels Avon to shutout victory over Midview

AVON — Everyone got involved for Avon on Friday night. The Eagles spread the touchdown wealth around with seven players scoring as they methodically marched past Midview 52-0 in Southwestern Conference play. "We got our younger players better," said Grant Barr, who finished as the team's leading receiver with three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. "The older players, we might have gotten taken out after one half, but we still got better and we still have some things to work on from that first half. I love having everybody score because it's just a good feeling for everybody." Avon (6-1, 4-0) set the tone immediately, scoring on all seven of its first-half drives with six touchdowns and a field goal. Really the only blemish in the first half was its three penalties, one of them a 15-yarder during a muffed punt that negated what would have been great field position at the Midview 1-yard line. Aside from that, Avon looked flawless in all three phases. Kicker Jensen Petro produced nine points and the offense piled up 266 total yards, 140 rushing and 126 passing, all in the first half. The defense was just as dominant, limiting Midview to three first downs and 38 yards at halftime. "We challenged our guys all week long," Avon coach Mike Elder said. "Midview, their coach and their team fight and battle and they're beat up right now. It's a sheer numbers thing. We have a lot more depth than they do and we knew that. But Midview has some great players who could play for us, there's no question, they just don't have enough of them right now. They just don't have the depth that we do and that's why the game ended up the way it did. We just wore them down. "But I'm proud of our guys. They played to our standard and I thought we did things well." Seven players from Avon scored touchdowns: running back Michael Colburn, Barr (from Blake Elder), receiver Caden Clapham (from Trevor Maly), running back Adrian Ramirez, running back Dean Andress, running back Isaac Gutierez and even defensive back Jakob Weatherspoon, who made a great catch in the corner of the end zone on a 26-yard pass from Elder. Midview (3-4, 0-4) responded in the second half, ultimately putting together 103 total yards. But the game was well in hand as Avon pulled its starters with the running clock. "The kids' attitudes were positive," Midview coach Jack Armstrong said. "They didn't lay down, they continued to fight and that's what I wanted. They wanted to stay in and they got mad (when I pulled the starters).
