James L. Smith

James L. Smith, 82, passed away after a short battle with acute leukemia Wednesday, September 17, 2025. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carole E. Smith (nee Ewalt); children, Brian (Susan) Smith, Jeff (Janna) Smith, Greg (Beth) Smith and Tad (Heather) Smith. He was a beloved grandpa of Andrew, Carson, Logan, Blake, Maya, Garrett and Caleb. He also leaves behind his cherished sister, Nancy (Sam) Mullen. Jim was born in Lorain, Ohio on July 12, 1943, to his late parents Norman and Catherine 'Kayte' Smith. He grew up in Amherst, Ohio. Jim graduated from Marion L. Steele Class of 1961. He proudly served his country for four years in the United States Air Force. Jim earned an associate degree and was an account executive for ADP. He retired after 31 years of hard work. Jim had a passion for softball, which he played as a pitcher until the age of 76. He also loved basketball and volunteered as an assistant coach, under his son, for Learwood Middle School 7th and 8th grade Girls and Boys teams for many years. He also volunteered as a scorekeeper for the middle school. He and Carole have been married for 58 years and enjoyed precious family time and spending time together. He also had a lifelong love for dogs. His beloved dog 'Sasha' was always by his side. They settled in Avon Lake in 1972 and raised their family there. Jim also loved family vacations at Douglas Lake in Northern Michigan where he enjoyed many hours fishing. All services for Jim will be at Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake, Ohio. A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 5 until 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 10 a.m. Christian burial to immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Amherst, Ohio.
