Final summer concert The weekend marks the last of the Live at the Lighthouse series of free musical lakeside concerts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Main Street Beach in Vermilion. This week Mike Moore will perform while the sun sets over Lake Erie. Brownhelm Historical Association meeting Guest speaker Matt Nahorn will present the program "Ancient Life Along the Vermilion" at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Historic Brownhelm School and Museum, 1950 N. Ridge Road, Vermilion. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the business meeting will run from 6:30 to 7 p.m. The historical program begins at 7:15 p.m. and is open to the public. The resources and landscape of the Vermilion River watershed have been a vital resource for thousands of years, providing a rich spot for hunting, gathering and later village sites for ancient American Indians. This program will look at why they lived here, how they used the features of the surrounding landscape, along with a review of their tools and a look at some of the fascinating artifacts they left behind. Nahorn, an Amherst city councilman, resides with his family in the historic 1811 Shupe homestead. Learning its history sparked his interest in the history of Lorain County, and led him to found the New Indian Ridge Museum in 2000. He serves on the Amherst Historical Society's Curator Committee, the Brownhelm Historical Association's Collections Committee, and is a member of the Lorain Historical Society's Board of Directors. Garden Club meeting The Amherst Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Amherst Historical Society, 113 S. Lake St. and Milan Ave., for a program titled "Managing Storm Water with Rain Barrels." Patti Donnellan, district administrator at Lorain Count Water Conservation District, will be the guest speaker. Social time is at 6:30 p.m. A short business meeting will follow the presentation. Anyone interested in gardening and plants is welcome to attend or join. Additional parking is at Quigley House across the street. Workshop Players opens new season "The Spitfire Grill" kicks off the 77th season for Workshop Players with a touching tale of human kindness. A troubled young woman just released from prison sets out for Wisconsin, inspired by an old travel book. The small town she settles in is itself filled with aching and regret. Yet, in her job at the Spitfire Grill, she finds a home that not only serves up delicious food, but also the healing power of community. The melodic folk-inspired music is the perfect underscoring for this touching tale Performances are Sept. 11 to 13, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 and 21.
