High school track: Avon girls get first-ever win at Comet Relays

AMHERST — The Avon girls continued their roll at Saturday's 69th Comet Relays. After winning the Lorain County Athletic Administrators' meet April 17, the Eagles picked right back up where they left of, winning the Comet Relays for the first time. The Eagles finished only fifth last year with 51 points, but racked up 115.98 points this year to easily outdistance Solon (94). Saturday's meet was the final track and field competition held at the Richard Cooley Track, which will be replaced as part of the stadium renovation and replacement project at the high school. Freshman Ally Brediger, sophomore Paige Justice and junior Kaitlyn Reese led Avon. Brediger won the 100 meters over Solon's Samantha Singleton (12.42), and teamed with Molley Kennedy, Madison Gettings and Jayla Antrum to win the 800-meter sprint medley (1:49.56). She also teamed with Kennedy, Antrum and Justice in the 800 relay, which narrowly finished second behind Solon, 1:43.15 to 1:43.24. Less than 45 minutes later, Brediger anchored Kennedy, Getting and Antrum to another second behind Solon in the 400 relay, 48.54 to 49.48. "Our team showed we can perform in some tough conditions," Brediger said. "Our program also showed its depth. We had so many different girls that helped earn points today. It was fun to compete against some strong competition. The wind made it tough for quality times so it was all about running hard and earning points for our team. Our coaches do a great job doing lineups and getting all our team competing at two different places every weekend." Justice was dominant in the hurdle events, winning the 100 hurdles over Fitch's Kayla Clinkscale, 15.95 to 16.47, and finishing second behind Twinsburg's Nicole Smith in the 300 hurdles. 46.09 to 46.61. "My performance was good," Justice said. "The headwind pushed me hard so I knew I just had to attack and pump my arms to make sure I was getting to the hurdle. As for 300s, I did OK but not as good as I wanted. I think I ran over every hurdle with the wrong lead leg. I was very excited to be a part of this 800 relay team. The hand-offs were a bit shaky but I think we did amazing. Once all the hand-offs are all clean I know this team can go far." Reese anchored the winning 6,400-meter relay that included Jessica Pendelton, Julianna Stein and Ava Melott (21:56.33). Reese later teamed with Pendelton, Kennedy Clere and Riley Moran to win the 4,000-meter distance medley. Justice and Reese were also members of the third-place 1,600-meter relay that included Pendelton and Antrum (4:08.35). "I thought the girls from top to bottom performed really well," Avon girls coach Sam Ulery said. "We had some standout performances under some pretty tough conditions. I was impressed with our distance team's tenacity. "Our sprint and hurdle depth really helped us do extremely well in all of those relays. Our throwers always enjoy Comets and love competing against a strong field. We're starting to see all of the pieces fit together for a postseason run." Cole Kepner led the Avon boys to a fourth-place finish. Kepner edged Toledo St. John's Brandon Pratt to win the 100 meters, 11.08 to 11.09, and was a member of the 800- and 400-meter relays that both placed fourth.
