Man who allegedly tried to kill woman in Elyria Police Department lobby indicted

An Elyria man who allegedly tried to strangle a woman in the lobby of the Elyria Police Department on West Avenue, after reportedly having gone to the station with the intent of killing a police officer, was indicted Friday. Daniel Carrillo, 38, of Bond Street, was indicted by a Lorain County grand jury on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault and strangulation, all felonies, and misdemeanor charges of assault and aggravated menacing. Carrillo was being held on $750,000 bond in the Lorain County Jail. The case has not been assigned to a Common Pleas judge. Messages seeking comment on the charges were left for Carrillo's attorney, Matt Bobrowski. The alleged victim was speaking with a clerk when Carrillo took off his belt and attacked her for approximately 20 seconds before officers subdued him, according to Elyria police and security camera footage that captured the assault just before 2:30 p.m. March 10. The target of "a traumatic and unprovoked attack," police said the woman did not know Carrillo. Carrillo had showed up to the Elyria police station at 18 West Ave. 10 minutes before the alleged assault. Acting strangely, he spoke with a clerk, sat down, removed his belt and folded it in half. Starting the alleged assault, Carrillo lifted the belt over his head and tried to put it around the woman's neck. The alleged victim told police she believed Carrillo was going to kill her. There was a struggle, during which Carrillo allegedly hit the woman hard enough to knock her back. She held Carrillo at bay until Elyria police officers swarmed into the lobby and restrained him. "(Carrillo) said he arrived at the Elyria Police Department with the explicit intent of killing an officer," according to an Elyria police report. "When Carrillo arrived at the police department and did not find an officer in the lobby, he observed (the victim) and decided that he would attack her. Carrillo went on to explain that his intent was to kill (the victim)." He also allegedly told police that if they gave him his belt back, he would try to kill again.
