Former North Ridgeville, Ohio State football standout Demario McCall facing 3rd felony drug case in a year (UPDATED)

Less than two weeks before he was scheduled to go on trial in Cuyahoga County on felony drug charges, former North Ridgeville and Ohio State University football standout Demario McCall is once again in trouble with the law. McCall, 27, of Cook Road in North Ridgeville, was arrested Friday by North Ridgeville police and booked into Lorain County Jail on three counts of trafficking cocaine, marijuana and other drugs, and three counts of possession of drugs including fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana. All the charges are felonies except one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, which is a misdemeanor. He was being held on $132,500 bond, according to jail records. According to a brief summary of events found on a North Ridgeville police report, on the morning of April 18 detectives and the Eastern Lorain County Emergency Response Team — a SWAT team made up of officers from the Avon, Avon Lake and North Ridgeville police departments — assisted the Elyria Police Department with a search warrant on Cook Road. Four adults including McCall and a juvenile were at the Cook Road address. McCall was the only one arrested and taken to the Lorain County Jail. Court records did not list an attorney. A hearing set in Elyria Municipal Court on Tuesday was rescheduled to Monday, according to court records. He had been set for trial on felony failure to comply and drug possession charges in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Fuerst's courtroom this coming Tuesday, according to court records there. In that case, a Cuyahoga County grand jury charged McCall with two counts of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and three counts of drug possession, all felonies, following a July 29, 2024, traffic stop by North Olmsted police.McCall allegedly failed to stop for police and had a Ruger LC9 semi-automatic handgun, $191 in cash, 1 to 5 grams of heroin, fentanyl and a benziodiazepine called bromazolam on him when he was stopped, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bond in that case, according to court records. While free on bond, McCall was charged in November in Lorain County Common Pleas Court with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine, trafficking a fentanyl-related compound, possession of a fentanyl-related compound, trafficking in drugs, possession of drugs, receiving stolen property and possession of criminal tools, according to court records. McCall has also pleaded not guilty in that case, which is assigned to Judge Christopher Rothgery's courtroom. A trial is set to start Aug. 25, according to court records. The Lorain County Prosecutor's Office asked Rothgery to revoke McCall's $200,000 surety and $200,000 personal bonds in that case, according to a motion it filed with the the court dated Monday. McCall had a record-setting high school career with the North Ridgeville High School football team. A first-team All-Ohio honoree in 2014 who holds the Lorain County record for the most rushing yards in a single game — 445 against Elyria Catholic — McCall helped the Rangers reach the playoffs in 2014 for the first time in five years. He ended his high school career with 4,519 total rushing yards and 69 touchdowns and played parts of six seasons on offense and defense for the Buckeyes football team before graduating in 2021 with a degree in sports industry. The NFL's Chicago Bears invited McCall to a rookie tryout mini-camp in 2022.
