High school wrestling: Lorain falls but shows promise for the future

LORAIN — As the postseason gets closer, Lorain is getting ready. While the Titans lost 48-34 to Cuyahoga Falls in a non-conference dual Thursday night, a couple of pins could give some of its wrestlers confidence heading into the Lake Erie League and postseason tournaments. "We came out a little flat," Lorain coach Dan Findley said. "We've got a couple of guys sick and my 190 (pounds) got hurt the other day, but we came back and a couple of other kids wrestled really tough. I'm happy with how some of them wrestled. My young kids got some good wins and are starting to put things together. They're getting some confidence going into postseason. "That's mainly what we're getting ready for now. Overall, I would have liked us to have been a little bit better, but I'm not too upset about how we wrestled today." The dual was closer than the lopsided score indicated, as there were a combined six forfeits, with four going Cuyahoga Falls' way. The teams split the eight matches contested with the Black Tigers securing pins in all of their wins — Ashik Magar (106), Ellijah Wadas (138), Antonio Johnson (144) and Dom Campisi (157). The Titans were without Duane Clark at 190, who is battling an injury. Lorain secured two pins and two technical falls. Junior Carlos Tomecko ended the night on a high note, pinning Judah Anderson with two seconds left in the first period at 126. Tomecko methodically built a 10-2 lead with two takedowns and a near fall before rolling Anderson and sticking the pin. "I was just staying focused and staying calm," Tomecko said. "I always go out there aggressive. So just stayed calm and really dominated the match on the score. Take no breaks off, just straight gas, that's what we've been practicing." Caiden Rosario (113) and Mykeal Lewis (165) each produced technical falls for Lorain. Rosario piled up 19 points in the first period against Justin Wilson while Lewis used a big second period — where he turned a 3-0 lead into a 10-0 lead thanks to a takedown and a near fall — then piled up seven more in the third. Sophomore Alfonzo Richardson strung together Lorain's only other pin, defeating Owen Hamrick in the opening match of the dual at 132. Hamrick secured a takedown and a near fall, almost pinning Richardson on two occasions, but Richardson flipped the script in the second minute, securing a reversal then working the pin with 22 seconds to spare.
