Girls wrestling: Elyria's Emilie Conley one of three girls with Lorain County ties to win titles at Lady Longhorn Holiday tournament

ROCKY RIVER — It was only fitting that Elyria's Emilie Conley wrestled in the 120-pound weight class in the finals of the Lady Longhorn Holiday tournament at Lutheran West High School on Saturday because it only took Conley 1:20 of mat time to win an individual title. Conley, a junior and defending regional qualifier, defeated Minerva's Aaleyah Barrett in 54 seconds in the semifinals after winning her first match of the day by forfeit. She only needed 26 seconds to pin Akron North's Kretina Rai in the finals. "In my finals match I focused on coming in with a strong mentality," said Conley, who improved to 22-2 this season. "I never met the girl I wrestled before. I've never even seen her before, so I knew all I could do was come out the way I have the past two days and do what I do. It was a good tournament. There were a lot of good wrestlers here and a lot of friends were made, so it was a good day." It was also a good day for the Pioneers as a team, as they finished second among 54 teams with 319 points. Elyria's 170 pounder Seraiah Jackson wrested for a championship, losing by pin to Brush's Amari Johnson at the 3:48 mark. Olivia Marcum (100) and Rielle Hawkins (140) had fifth-place finishes for the Pioneers. All eight Elyria wrestlers finished in the top 10 of their bracket. Conley was one of three individual champions with ties to Lorain County. Avon Lake's Rejan Al-hashash won at 155 and Cali Otero, a Lutheran West freshman and Lorain native, took home the title at 100. Otero was one of two individual champions for the Longhorns, joining Olivia Grace (145). "It feels really good to get this win at home. I am really proud of myself. I am glad I had this opportunity," said Otero, who pinned Hudson's Bella Buckles 1:28 into her finals match. "I worked really hard to get ready for this and I went to extra practices to help get my head right. "I always think in my head, 'All glory be to God.' He's the one who does every thing and I know everything I did this weekend happened for a reason." Al-hashash did what she does so well, dominating the 155-pound bracket. The senior wrestled eight times over the two-day event, winning seven matches by pin and the other by injury default. Her semifinal match against Black River's Taylor Owen was the only one to reach the second period. "My finals match was really good, said Al-hashash, who pinned Mogodore's Mackenzie Shellenbarger 1:45 into the final. "It was a really rewarding weekend with all of the hard work my coaches and I do every day in practice." The Shoregals finished fifth in the teams standings with 282.5 points. Mallory Zadel (115) and Loa Seone (190) had third-place finishes for Avon Lake. Columbia didn't have individual champions but the Raiders put four girls — Youstina Hanna 140), Gabriy'el Grace (145), Cailyn Demagall (155) and Jasmine Razo (170) — on the podium. Raiders senior Sarah Napier finished seventh at 130 but, by winning her final match of the day with a pin of Madison's Kora Radolovic, she became the first female wrestler at Columbia to win 100 matches.
