High school football: Avon QB Nolan Good among Ohio Mr. Football finalists

There has never been an Ohio Mr. Football from Lorain County. Avon quarterback Nolan Good is in the running to become the first. Good was announced as one of eight finalists as selected by the district chairpersons and officers of the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association on Wednesday. The OPSMA's 221 registered members have until Monday to vote, with the announcement of the winner at 4 p.m. Dec. 5 in Canton, before the start of the OHSAA state football finals. The first state final will be the Division II game at 7 p.m. that day -- a game Good could conceivably play in. Avon plays Archbishop Hoban on Friday night with a trip to the state finals on the line. Good's postseason last year was thwarted by a broken collarbone against Olmsted Falls. The Kent State commit recovered to lead the Eagles to another undefeated regular season as a senior and a ninth straight Southwestern Conference championship. Avon entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in Division II, Region 6 after Good completed 67 percent of his passes this year for 2,375 yards and 23 TDs to six INT. He added 353 yards rushing and five TDs on 37 carries. Other finalists are Mentor quarterback Scotty Fox, Indian Valley running back Grady Kinsey, Olentangy Liberty quarterback Andre Leonard, Ontario quarterback Bodpegn Miller, Walsh Jesuit quarterback Keller Moten, Cincinnati Moeller quarterback Matt Ponatoski and Bellefontaine quarterback Tavien St. Clair. Ohio's Mr. Football was selected by the Associated Press from 1987-2016. Since 2017 it has been presented by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. The OPSMA All-Ohio teams will begin being released on Dec. 9.
