Highway Patrol identifies woman killed in crash after she "traveled left of center"

Authorities have identified a North Olmsted woman who was killed when she went left of center and struck a semitractor-trailer on U.S. Route 20 in Pittsfield Township on Friday. The Elyria post of the State Highway Patrol identified Tammy Alam, 51, as the woman who was killed in a head-on collision on Route 20 near the border of Pittsfield Township and Oberlin. In a release, the patrol said that Alam's 2020 Chevrolet Blazer crashed into a 2019 Peterbilt 579 semitractor-trailer driven by Stephen Maag, 53, of Milan. Maag was not injured in the crash. "It was determined that Alam traveled left of center, entering the westbound lane (and) striking Maag head on," the release said. "After impact, Alam's vehicle traveled off the north side of the roadway and struck a snowmobile that was for sale in a yard." Alam was pronounced dead at the scene. Route 20 was closed for about six hours on Friday evening for the investigation and cleanup of the crash. The Wellington Fire District was also called to the scene, and Oberlin fire, Oberlin police, the Central Lorain County Ambulance District and the Ohio Department of Transportation also assisted. Three towing companies; D & R Towing, Patton's 5 Star Towing and Interstate Towing, were called in to help clear the scene. According to the release, the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol and drug use are not suspected to be factors in the crash.
