Jack Conklin, Greg Newsome II, Dalvin Tomlinson to be activated, return to practice Tuesday

The Browns still won't be whole this week, but they're getting closer.Tackle Jack Conklin, cornerback Greg Newsome II, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and safety D'Anthony Bell will practice Tuesday for the first time this summer, coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday. The Browns will return to the field Tuesday as they prepare for the season opener Sept. 8 vs. the Dallas Cowboys.Five thoughts heading into the season openerLeft tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. will come off the injury list but won't practice Tuesday. He's "progressing" and will be on the 53-man roster to open the regular season.The Browns expect rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. to be placed on the commissioner's exempt list before the deadline Tuesday at 4 p.m. for rosters to be cut to 53. Hall was charged with domestic violence Aug. 13, and Commissioner Roger Goodell can use the list as the league investigates the incident.While on the list Hall wouldn't count against the team's 53 roster spots.Running back Nick Chubb (knee) will remain on the physically unable to perform list, as expected, and will miss at least the first four games.Nick Chubb expected to stay on PUP, miss at least first four gamesStefanski said running back/returner Nyheim Hines (knee) isn't ready to practice and it's unclear if he'll begin the season on the non-football injury list, which would require him to miss at least the first four games. He was injured in July 2023 in a personal watercraft accident and hoped to be able to practice at the start of camp.Conklin (knee), Wills (knee), Newsome (hamstring), Tomlinson (knee) and Bell (shin) were placed on the injury lists at the start of camp.Also returning to practice will be linebackers Jordan Hicks (undisclosed injury) and Tony Fields II (leg), tackle James Hudson III (ankle) and running back Pierre Strong Jr. (rib) — all of whom were injured during camp or the preseason.Analysis: With preseason over, here's final prediction for initial 53-man rosterPro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward remains in the concussion protocol, but Stefanski said he's progressing.Running back D'Onta Foreman won't practice Tuesday after leaving the preseason finale Saturday with a rib injury.Wills and Conklin have been sidelined since season-ending surgeries last year, and Newsome and Tomlinson went on the injury lists after surgeries right before the start of training camp. Hicks suffered an undisclosed injury early in camp.The return of Conklin and eventually Wills gives the Browns a chance to get whole along the offensive line. They were down to Germain Ifedi at left tackle following preseason injuries to Hudson and Hakeem Adeniji.Wills has started at left tackle since he was drafted No. 10 in 2020, and Conklin is a two-time All-Pro at right tackle. Stefanski was vague when asked if Conklin would practice at left tackle with Wills still out. Conklin worked on his left tackle stance and footwork last week as he rehabbed with athletic trainers.Conklin's anterior cruciate ligament tore Sept. 10 during the season opener against the Bengals.Newsome joins Ward and Martin Emerson Jr. to form one of the league's best cornerback trios.
