Child mauled to death by family dog

LORAIN — A 6-year-old boy is dead after being attacked by a dog. Lorain police responded to the 1700 block of East 31st Street shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a child attacked by a family dog. The child, identified by Lorain County Coroner Dr. Frank Miller as Jaxson Dvorak, was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries, according to Lorain Police Lt. Jacob Morris. As of Wednesday evening, no charges had been filed as the incident remained under investigation, Morris said. He declined to release any further information. Staff from the Lorain County Coroner's Office were observed carrying the boy's body from the home just before 5:30 p.m. Friendship Animal Protective League Executive Director Greg Willey and his staff removed an adult pit bull, an adult shepherd mix and six puppies from the home. The puppies are 3 to 4 months old, Willey said, and appear to be a litter from the two adult dogs. Willey said all of the dogs have been signed over to the APL. The two adult dogs will be euthanized and tested for rabies and the puppies will remain with the rescue, as they were housed separately from the adult dogs in the home at the time of the attack. Morris said Lorain police initially requested mutual aid from the Lorain County Dog Warden, who did not respond. He said police did not know the reason the warden was unable to respond to the scene, which prompted the Lorain County Sheriff's Office dispatch to contact Friendship APL for assistance in removing the animals from the home. Lorain County Administrator Jeffrey Armbruster said he had been made aware of the incident and was working with Lorain police and the warden to determine what occurred. He said the county would be getting a report from the dog warden on the incident. He said there are rules and regulations governing the warden and other staff, but they are all civil servants and should work together and offer mutual aid in a moment of need.
